While this list includes only 11, it could have mentioned many more, like Aaron Carter, Bella Thorne, Jake T. Austin, Kirsten Storms,<\/span> <span>Dutch Whitlock,<\/span> <span>and Debby Ryan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps one of the most grievous cases is Lee Thompson Young, who tragically committed suicide at age 29 in 2013<\/span> <span>after starring in Disney\u2019s \u201cThe Famous Jett Jackson\u201d\u00a0for more than three years. Lee had struggled with depression and bipolar disorder since he was a teen, but mental illness following the Disney years is unfortunately not rare. (Disclosure: The Daily Wire has announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/videos\/introducing-dw-kids\">plans<\/a> for children\u2019s entertainment content.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jeffrey Rabhan, former chair at NYU\u2019s recorded music school <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/11\/03\/did-disney-destroy-demi\/\"><span>has <\/span><\/a><span>described the dark phenomena<\/span><span>, saying, \u201cBeing part of the Disney machine can be a dream and a nightmare\u2026. even new artists can find themselves working as hard as seasoned superstars from the beginning: between the network, touring, theme parks and film, it\u2019s like graduating fifth grade and jumping to an 80-hour-a-week job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Is it a coincidence that all these stars have a Disney start in common? Regardless of their Disney connection, we\u2019re all rooting for a better future for these celebrities. Some have turned things around better than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11) Adam Hicks<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Hicks was all over Disney Channel from 2009-2013. He starred in \u201cZeke and Luther,\u201d \u201cLemonade Mouth,\u201d\u201cJonas,\u201d <\/span><i><span>and<\/span><\/i><span> \u201cPair of Kings.\u201d In 2018, like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, Hicks and his girlfriend, Danni Tamburo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/people\/2018\/01\/25\/adam-hicks-disney-arrested-armed-robberies\/1068172001\/\">stuck<\/a> pistols in people\u2019s faces while demanding money and other valuables. His attorney claimed mental health issues to explain the three attempted robberies and two felony counts of second-degree robbery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10) Shia LaBeouf<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>You may remember LaBeouf as Louis from the Disney show \u201cEven Stevens.\u201d Post-Disney, LaBeouf\u00a0 was charged after attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywood.com\/general\/shia-labeouf-caught-up-in-knife-attack-shocker-57213715\">stab<\/a> his neighbor, which was followed in subsequent years by misdemeanor criminal trespassing and drunk driving \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/article\/inside-shia-labeouf-arrests-legal-troubles\/\">several times<\/a>. Then there were the bar fights, disorderly conduct, obstruction, plagiarism, and appearance on the red carpet with a paper bag over his head and the words \u201cI am not famous anymore\u201d written on it. When asked why he was donning the paper bag he answered, \u201cI am a bag. Ask me a bag question.\u201d And during the filming of the movie \u201cFury,\u201d he bizarrely refused to shower for a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9) Selena Gomez<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Selena Gomez starred as Alex on Disney\u2019s \u201cWizards of Waverly Place.\u201d In an interview in 2017 at 25 years old, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instyle.com\/celebrity\/selena-gomez\">told<\/a> InStyle, \u201cI think it is really dysfunctional to be in this industry at a young age where you\u2019re figuring out who you are.\u201d Gomez has been open and honest about her battles with anxiety and depression. When diagnosed with\u00a0bipolar disorder, Gomez said, \u201cI felt a huge weight lifted off me when I found out. I could take a deep breath and go, \u2018OK, that explains so much.\u2019\u201d She has been on the road to healing and appears to be continuing on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8) Orlando Brown<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Brown played Eddie on the Disney show \u201cThat\u2019s So Raven.\u201d He now has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/965532\/that-s-so-raven-s-orlando-brown-flashes-a-smile-in-latest-mugshot\">rap sheet<\/a> longer than a Sugarhill Gang lyric. His arrests include multiple DUIs, public intoxication, domestic battery, threatening to murder a woman, felony drug possession (meth), and burglary. Since his felonious charges, he has started a music label and appears to be turning his life around. In the song titled \u201cThe Lord Is My Shepherd,\u201d Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackenterprise.com\/former-disney-star-orlando-brown-goes-viral-with-new-song-about-overcoming-addiction\/\">shares<\/a> how he handed his life over to God after his dark times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7) Vanessa Hudgens\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Vanessa was the face of \u201cHigh School Musical.\u201d After leaving Disney, she took some different roles from the more wholesome ones she\u2019d had before in films like \u201cSpring Breakers.\u201d When Coronavirus hit, she took to Instagram to tell fans, \u201cEven if everybody gets it, like yeah, people are going to die, which is terrible\u2026 but inevitable?\u201d She quickly apologized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6) Zac Efron<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Efron\u2019s role as Troy Bolton made him a teen heartthrob \u2014 and a millionaire. He hasn\u2019t had a public meltdown like many others on this list, but he did get into a fight with a homeless man. He also battled alcoholism and spent time in rehab for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/05\/01\/showbiz\/celebrity-news-gossip\/zac-efron-addiction-struggle\/index.html\">cocaine<\/a> addiction. The help he sought must have paid off because Efron says he feels healthier and happier than ever and has since starred in numerous hit films, including The Greatest Showman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5) Britney Spears<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Britney got her start on the \u201cMickey Mouse Club\u201d with Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, and Christina Aguilera. She famously had her major breakdown in 2007, but there was more: She also overdosed on amphetamines and was placed under psychiatric hold. She shaved her head days later and spent time in and out of treatment centers for a while. Today, Spears seems to have gotten her life back together. In November of 2021, a judge ended a\u00a0conservatorship that had controlled Britney Spears\u2019s life and money since 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4) Joe Jonas\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Jonas (and his uber-famous brothers) have navigated their Disney days and subsequent fame fairly well. But a few years ago, Joe Jonas wrote\u00a0a revealing essay about his life growing up as a Disney star and the drug abuse that followed. He shared the tremendous pressure he and his brothers endured while trying to live up to the high standards of the Disney brand. After the essay came out, Ashley Lee of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/music-news\/12-shocking-reveals-joe-jonas-660894\/\"><span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span> wrote, \u201cJoe observed that the network pulls \u2018spunky\u2019 stars into the spotlight, and then pushes them off the edge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3) Demi Lovato<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Demi Lovato starred in Disney Channel\u2019s movie \u201cCamp Rock\u201d and the show \u201cSonny With a Chance.\u201d In the documentary series\u00a0\u201dDemi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,\u201d she shares the details of her 2018 overdose, her three strokes, heart attack, brain damage, and rape \u2014\u00a0by a Disney co-star who faced no repercussions for his actions. Her reputation carries a record of having punched a backup dancer, struggled with a cocaine addiction, and been diagnosed with a variety of mental health issues. She has come out as \u201cnon-binary,\u201d revealed a \u201cGrandmother Spider\u201d tattoo on the side of her head, and claimed to have had a beautiful conversation with aliens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) Lindsay Lohan<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Who didn\u2019t adore Lindsay Lohan in the Disney remake of the classic \u201cThe Parent Trap\u201d? That was just the beginning of her fame as she went on to star in five more Disney movies. But in a twisted narrative posited by Disney, she dealt with a manufactured teenage romance and a fake rivalry with Hilary Duff. Cameras followed her everywhere, and in her younger years, she welcomed them. But it didn\u2019t take long for her to become better known for DUIs, probation violations, and stents in drug rehab and prison. Now, it appears her issues are in the past. Lohan has distanced herself from the crazy Hollywood life as she quietly resides in London, where, perhaps, \u201cThe Parent Trap\u201d life has come full circle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1) Miley Cyrus<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Miley was Disney\u2019s Hannah Montana. But now, her past drug problems and risqu\u00e9 performances are well-documented. In an article for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmagazine.com\/story\/miley-cyrus-hannah-montana-toddlers-and-tiaras#:~:text=I%20mark%20that%20up%20to,didn&#039;t%20know%20anything%20else.\"><span>W Magazine<\/span><\/a><span>, Cyrus shared, \u201cNow that I\u2019m older, I realize that\u2019s a lot to put on a kid. To have them have to get their makeup done and also balance school. I think what was hard for me was balancing everything.\u201d Trying to navigate those two worlds wasn\u2019t easy to say the least. \u201cI think that\u2019s what\u2019s probably a little wrong with me now,\u201d she said. \u201cI mark that up to doing some extreme damage in my psyche as an adult person.\u201d Working 12-hour days, Cyrus began experiencing anxiety attacks and nausea. Her father, Billy Ray, was on the show as well, but he has blamed Disney for his daughter\u2019s downward spiral.
