The U.S. has the eleventh-highest infant mortality rate among developed countries, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook image attempts to compare infant mortality rates and vaccine practices in the U.S. and Japan. It claims that Japan\u00a0does not vaccinate children under the age of two and has the lowest infant mortality rate while the U.S. \u201chas the highest Infant Death Rate and gives 28 doses of vaccines by age 2!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These claims are inaccurate. While Japan does not have any compulsory vaccine laws, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tokyo-coronavirus-pandemic-coronavirus-vaccine-japan-olympic-games-b9156c483d1c8271fc6772daf2827fca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>, nearly all children in Japan are vaccinated against certain diseases. The World Health Organization reports that 96 percent of 1-year-olds in Japan are vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, one of the highest rates of vaccination in the world. Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.oecd.org\/healthcare\/child-vaccination-rates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OECD<\/a>\u00a0shows that 97 percent of children in Japan were vaccinated against measles as of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niid.go.jp\/niid\/images\/vaccine\/schedule\/2016\/EN20161001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Institute of Infectious Diseases<\/a> and the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpeds.or.jp\/uploads\/files\/2020%20English%20JPS%20Immunization%20Schedule.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pediatric Society<\/a> recommend infants start receiving certain vaccines before the age of two. An average two-year-old in Japan is vaccinated against at least a dozen diseases, according to the vaccination schedule from the country\u2019s pediatric society. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/03\/13\/fact-check-martha-washington-vaccinated-smallpox-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Was Martha Washington Vaccinated For Smallpox?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The image\u2019s claims regarding infant mortality rates are also incorrect. Japan has the third-lowest infant mortality rate among developed countries, behind Estonia and Iceland, with 1.9 deaths per 1,000 births, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.oecd.org\/healthstat\/infant-mortality-rates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OECD<\/a>.
