Jerry Moran and Montana Sen. Steve Daines shared the request in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000180-448c-d31b-a580-dc9fbe7d0000&#038;nname=huddle&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b4be0000&#038;nrid=0000014e-f115-dd93-ad7f-f91513e50001&#038;nlid=630309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> on Tuesday that was obtained by Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Ukraine\u2019s successful defense of Kyiv and Russia\u2019s subsequent withdrawal of forces from the areas surrounding the capital, we encourage you to fully open the United States embassy without delay,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkraine faces enormous military, economic, and humanitarian challenges as a result of this war. America\u2019s restored diplomatic presence in Kyiv will enhance cooperation with a democratic partner as it wages an existential defense and symbolically affirm our nation\u2019s commitment to Ukraine\u2019s territorial sovereignty,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Moran and Daines, at least one additional Republican senator has expressed support for the nation\u2019s embassy to restore operations to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time,\u201d Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), an Army veteran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/us\/2022-04-14\/american-embassy-kyiv-ukraine-russia-war-5687189.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Stars and Stripes last week. \u201cWe have numerous American [non-governmental organizations] operating in Ukraine, thousands of Americans who never left, and American news operations in the country. It\u2019s time to return \u2013 and show Ukraine, and the world, our enduring commitment to their freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. announced it was relocating its embassy operations from the capital of Kyiv to the city of Lviv shortly before Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine began in February.<\/p>\n<p>On February 24, the day Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, a State Department spokesperson announced the team would be working from Poland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey remain there and are not currently traveling over the border to Ukraine,\u201d the spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/595685-us-officially-moves-ukraine-embassy-operations-to-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continually assess the security situation to determine when it may be safe for U.S. government personnel to return to Ukraine to conduct diplomacy on the ground and provide in-person consular services,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv endured multiple attacks by Russia, which have shifted recently toward the eastern region of Ukraine. On April 9, European Union High Representative Josep Borrell met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv to announce plans to restart its operations in Ukraine\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this visit, the European Union is returning back to Kyiv. I mean this literally: our Head of our Delegation is back here, so that we can work even more directly and more closely with the Ukrainian authorities,\u201d Borrell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/ukraine-eu-resumes-its-diplomatic-presence-kyiv_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Italy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/europe\/live-news\/ukraine-russia-putin-news-04-09-22\/h_b26b81aebd6875fc842155d7072e67e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also returned<\/a> from a move to Lviv to operate in Kyiv once again, according to a CNN report.<\/p>\n<p>As of Tuesday, at least 17 nations have returned diplomats to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong the countries sending their diplomats back to Kyiv to reopen their embassies are: France, Italy, Turkey, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Belgium, and Austria,\u201d Foreign Policy <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/04\/19\/diplomatic-life-returns-kyiv-embassies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe European Union also reopened its diplomatic mission in Kyiv this month.
