Ron DeSantis on Tuesday said the state of Florida would be looking into ways it can potentially \u201chold accountable\u201d the Twitter board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>He made the remarks at a news conference in The Villages, where he signed another education reform bill into law.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis&#8217; announcement came after it was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1514718700674306052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Twitter was considering \u201ca poison pill to thwart\u201d an offer that billionaire Elon Musk made to purchase the company. In response, Musk tweeted, \u201cIf the current Twitter board takes actions contrary to shareholder interests, they would be breaching their fiduciary duty. The liability they would thereby assume would be titanic in scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis said Tuesday the state of Florida has shares in Twitter, which he indicated was problematic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t buy it,\u201d he said referring to the state\u2019s investment in Twitter. \u201cWe have people that run the fund. But nevertheless, it hasn\u2019t been exactly great on returns on investment. It\u2019s been pretty stagnant for many, many years. To me I think that\u2019s probably an injury to the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his administration \u201cwas looking at ways the state of Florida potentially can be holding these Twitter board of directors accountable for breaching their fiduciary duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tesla CEO has been buying Twitter shares since the end of January, spending $2.64 billion, according to an SEC filing. According to the filing, Musk owned 9.1% of Twitter. Initially, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal expressed excitement that Musk would join Twitter\u2019s board. Five days later, he announced Musk wasn\u2019t joining the board.<\/p>\n<p>Four days after that, Musk offered to purchase Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1514681422212128770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeting<\/a> he would \u201cendeavor to keep as many shareholders in privatized Twitter as allowed by law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his SEC filing, Musk included a letter to Bret Taylor, chairman of the board of Twitter, stating, \u201cI invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, since making my investment I now realize the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He offered to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter has faced criticism for years for limiting free speech on its platform, blocking user content and users themselves, including banning former President Donald Trump from using the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, an avid Tweeter with 80 million followers, told Chris Anderson in a TED <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/whats-on-elon-musks-mind\/id1437306870?i=1000557722239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> last week, \u201cIt\u2019s just really important that people have the reality and the perception that they\u2019re able to speak freely within the bounds of the law. I think broadly, the civilizational risk is decreased the more we can increase the trust of Twitter as a public platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter isn\u2019t the first company DeSantis is hoping to distance from Florida investment.<\/p>\n<p>Last December, Florida began divesting funds in what he called \u201cwoke corporations\u201d operating in the state, DeSantis said. He made the announcement after he and two other trustees of the State Board of Administration voted to retake &#8220;control of the state pension fund\u2019s proxy voting from outside fund managers who may pursue social ideologies inconsistent with the state\u2019s values or the financial interests of the state\u2019s investments, and by determining the state\u2019s exposure to Chinese investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also took other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/florida-taking-action-against-communist-china-and-woke-corporations\/article_58cda2ae-6328-11ec-b7af-cfcdf37b2007.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actions<\/a> last year \u201cto combat woke corporate ideology and malign foreign influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, DeSantis signed bills into law to protect parents, children, teachers and employees from \u201cwoke ideology\u201d and the state Department of Education recently rejected 41% of submitted math books over CRT.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
