{"id":1446750,"date":"2022-04-19T19:44:37","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T23:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1446750"},"modified":"2022-04-19T19:44:51","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T23:44:51","slug":"toxic-and-obsessive-young-people-bailing-on-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/toxic-and-obsessive-young-people-bailing-on-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Toxic And Obsessive\u2019: Young People Bailing On Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"float:left\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">18<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Ftoxic-and-obsessive-young-people-bailing-on-social-media%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1446750&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/teens.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>There was a time when Facebook was for old people, Instagram and TikTok were for young people, and Twitter was for, well, boring people.<\/p>\n<p>But more and more young people are deciding that all of social media is a huge time suck, pointless \u2014 perhaps even detrimental \u2014 and bailing altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZoomers are known for being glued to their phones, but some twenty-somethings are taking a stand against all-consuming apps such as TikTok and Instagram,\u201d the New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/18\/the-ultimate-waste-gen-z-says-no-to-tiktok-social-media\/\">reported<\/a>. \u201cCalling them \u2018toxic\u2019 and \u2018obsessive,\u2019 these young people say they\u2019re regaining control of their time by stepping away from the scroll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post piece cites a recent survey of 10,000 teens commissioned by investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/piper2.bluematrix.com\/docs\/pdf\/3bad99c6-e44a-4424-8fb1-0e3adfcbd1d4.pdf?utm_source=morning_brew&#038;utm_medium=newsletter&#038;utm_campaign=mb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piper Sandler<\/a> that found \u201conly 22% of respondents between the ages of 7 and 22 named Meta\u2019s popular photo-sharing platform as their favorite app, down from 31% in spring 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you delete it you realize you don\u2019t need it,\u201d Gabriella Steinerman, 20, told the Post. \u201cThe economics major dumped both Instagram and TikTok back in 2019, and said the relief she felt after unplugging was almost immediate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an even more extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-29296-3#MOESM1\">study<\/a> of more than 84,000 young people released last month, researchers found that use of social media is linked to poor mental health for adolescents and teenagers, especially around puberty.<\/p>\n<p>The study found young people who spend a lot of time on social media can have poor body image and low self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNarrowing in on adolescents, the team found that for people in the 16- to 21-year-old age range, both very low and very high social media use were both linked with lower life satisfaction,\u201d The Verge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/29\/23000460\/social-media-mental-health-window-puberty\">reported<\/a>, citing the study. \u201cIn 10- to 15-year-olds, there wasn\u2019t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>much difference in life satisfaction between kids reporting low and high social media use. But in that group, girls with high social media use had lower life satisfaction than boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another study, this one in March 2020, researchers found that 32% of young, female Instagram subscribers were harmed by the platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-knows-instagram-is-toxic-for-teen-girls-company-documents-show-11631620739?mod=hp_lead_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal. \u201cThey found it exacerbates negative body image, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and, in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts,\u201d the Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/16\/instagram-wreaking-havoc-young-girls-and-it-knows-it\/\">reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>And a December survey from Tallo <a href=\"https:\/\/tallo.com\/blog\/how-gen-z-feels-about-integrating-social-media-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> that 56% of members of Generation Z said \u201csocial media has led them to feel left out by their peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Tallo poll, 75% of young women using social media platforms were prompted \u201cto compare themselves to peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c82% of Gen Zers said that social media had proven to be a distraction to them while doing schoolwork,\u201d Tallo wrote. \u201cIt was also revealed that 3 in 4 female respondents said that social media has caused them to compare themselves to peers, while only 56% of males said the same and more than half of all respondents (56%) indicated that social media has led them to feel left out by their peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent, and ran the Drudge Report from 2010 to 2015.
