It\u2019s never been woker. Agenda-driven plots and messages in mainstream movies have left many Americans wondering, \u201cCan\u2019t I just watch a movie or scroll social media without having that crap thrown in my face?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Well, funny thing: While Hollywood smears leftist goop in our faces, they censor movies and entertainment for audiences in China and the Middle East, removing much of what has so worn us out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>How It Started<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>We can trace this appeasement back to 1994. China\u2019s economy was becoming more modern and ever-so-slowly opening to the world, and some pretty big American players began moving into China. Following the Cultural Revolution, Chinese movie theaters reopened, but their seats were mostly empty. The only entertainment the government had to offer were horribly boring propaganda films. So, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world101.cfr.org\/global-era-issues\/globalization\/big-china-global-market-hollywood-movies\"><span>deal<\/span><\/a><span> was struck that allowed 10 American films a year into China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There were plenty of bumps in the road along the way, with government officials frequently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/bs-xpm-1999-05-03-9905030250-story.html\"><span>expressing anger<\/span><\/a><span> at movie studios, but Hollywood executives were well aware of the money-making potential in this massive nation. They didn\u2019t want an angry CCP. Disney was even rumored to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/1996\/11\/27\/dalai-lama-film-threatens-disney-role-in-china\/c820cc8f-a369-4865-ae8d-8e820aea37f7\/\"><span>tanked<\/span><\/a><span> one of their own movies (Kundun directed by Martin Scorsese) in 1997 on purpose to placate Chinese government officials. That wasn\u2019t enough, so they sent Michael Eisner to China to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2020\/09\/11\/hollywood-makes-shameful-assentions-to-beijing\/\"><span>personally apologize<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Immediately after\u00a0the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, an entourage of Chinese executives flew to Los Angeles for a little <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/15\/business\/media\/15moguls.html\"><span>free education<\/span><\/a><span>. They had been chosen by China\u2019s State Administration on Radio, Film, and Television. Their goal? Learn how the American film industry had impacted global culture so they could do the same back home. UCLA film professor Robert Rosen and a group of Hollywood execs were only too happy to oblige. They shared their industry experience with these Communist students and taught them how to influence people through entertainment. Don\u2019t think for a second those lessons were only going to be used back home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2012, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUS22096264620120220\"><span>new deal<\/span><\/a><span> was struck between then-Vice President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. They agreed on an expansion that would allow 34 foreign films into Chinese theaters. Studios would also get 25% of Chinese ticket sales instead of 13%. That looked like a win for America. Thanks, Joe! But wait a second. Why would China give up 12% of its movie money? Because it allowed them to gain a foothold in Hollywood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>How It\u2019s Going<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>There\u2019s an interesting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/report\/made-in-hollywood-censored-by-beijing\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> by PEN titled, \u201cMade in Hollywood, Censored by Beijing.\u201d Check out this excerpt: \u201cThe Chinese government, under Xi Jinping especially, has heavily emphasized its desire to ensure that Hollywood filmmakers\u2014to use their preferred phrase\u2014\u2019tell China\u2019s story well.\u2019 They even go so far as \u2018directly inviting Chinese government censors onto their film sets.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Money is the root. Let\u2019s take Disney for example. Marvel Studios alone banked more than $1 billion from China\u2019s box office in 2019. That might explain why the producers of Disney\u2019s <\/span><i><span>Mulan<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-54064654\"><span>thanked<\/span><\/a><span> the publicity department of the \u201cCPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Committee.\u201d They also thanked the \u201cTurpan Municipal Bureau of Public Security.\u201d These are the same political and disciplinary institutions that are carrying out social genocide against China\u2019s Uyghur minority. And they\u2019re applauded right there in Mulan\u2019s credits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You may have heard where <\/span><i><span>Mulan<\/span><\/i><span> was filmed. The film location hosts modern-day concentration camps for the Uyghur Muslim population. While the CCP <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/china-xinjiang.html\"><span>insists<\/span><\/a><span> the camps are \u201ceducational training centers,\u201d human rights leaders worldwide have condemned them as an attempted genocide by the CCP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For instance, as the Harvard International Review <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hir.harvard.edu\/rated-c-for-censored-walt-disney-in-chinas-pocket\/\"><span>puts it<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cUyghur women are systematically sexually\u00a0tortured.\u201d And \u201cThe process these survivors describe is one of organized genital mutilation, rape, and sterilization of an entire population.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sounds like a great spot to shoot, huh? This doesn\u2019t seem like Walt\u2019s Disney.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s a brief look at a few other examples of censorship to appease other nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>Brokeback Mountain<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2006\/mar\/07\/awardsandprizes.china\"><span>didn\u2019t air<\/span><\/a><span> in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The remake of <\/span><i><span>Red Dawn<\/span><\/i><span> initially had China invading America but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleedingcool.com\/movies\/red-dawn-2012-remake-tainted-sony-mgm-china\/\"><span>changed it<\/span><\/a><span> to North Korea. (In the original, the antagonist was Russia.) That wasn\u2019t enough. China still banned it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>Noah<\/span><\/i><span> with Russell Crowe was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/noah-movie-banned-middle-east_n_4921805\"><span>banned<\/span><\/a><span> in the Middle East for \u201cportrayal of a prophet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>That quick<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m4UG3SMiedQ\"><span> lesbian kiss<\/span><\/a><span> J.J. Abrams blindsided us with at the end of <\/span><i><span>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker<\/span><\/i><span>? It sparked quite the controversy here as well as globally. Many audiences overseas didn\u2019t see that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/comicbook.com\/starwars\/news\/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-spoilers-lgbt-kiss-scene-china-censored\/\"><span>.<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>Christopher Robin<\/span><\/i><span>? Banned. Why? Someone on social media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/aug\/07\/china-bans-winnie-the-pooh-film-to-stop-comparisons-to-president-xi\"><span>compared<\/span><\/a><span> Jinping to Winnie the Pooh. We\u2019re not kidding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>CHINA AND WOKEISM IN AMERICA<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>\u201cYou can\u2019t blame China for exploiting divisions and self-doubt in its primary competitor for global supremacy.\u201d (The Wall Street Journal<\/span><i><span>, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-authoritarian-china-loves-woke-u-s-11615577110\"><span>March 2021<\/span><\/a><span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vivek Ramaswamy, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Woke-Inc-Corporate-Americas-Justice\/dp\/1546090789\"><span>author<\/span><\/a><span> of \u201cWoke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America\u2019s Social Justice Scam,\u201d puts it this way: \u201cThe communist regime in China is using \u2018wokeism\u2019 as a geopolitical tool to undermine U.S. democracy. They are using that to divide us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, is China playing us?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While movies tout patriotism toward China, they tend to paint America in a negative light. The frequency with which Hollywood criticizes America\u2019s political leaders and culture has led many Americans to feel that filmmakers and celebrities hate this country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Disney turns a blind eye to genocide in China, they\u2019ve been actively calling attention to human rights abuses here in America. They <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/06\/04\/disney-pledge-social-justice-organizations-george-floyd\/\"><span>supported<\/span><\/a><span> social justice organizations like Black Lives Matter and have reaffirmed their commitment to the ideology and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. And they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/28\/disney-vows-to-help-repeal-dont-say-gay-law.html\"><span>targeted<\/span><\/a><span> a Florida law that protects children from grooming in elementary school. Hollywood\u2019s hypocrisy knows no bounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an article for The National Review, Matthew Continetti wrote, \u201cThe same businesses that promote the progressive reconstruction, radical reform, or transformation of the United States are intertwined with the revisionist great power that aims to replace the United States as global hegemon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And why does China censor out hypersexual and \u201cwoke\u201d content right along with anti-CCP imagery? They understand what weakens a culture. As an article from The Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2021\/09\/04\/the-threat-from-the-illiberal-left\"><span>put<\/span><\/a><span> it, \u201cA resurgent China sneers at liberalism for being selfish, decadent and unstable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So wokeism, drug use, curse words, homosexual references, and frivolous sex scenes are all cut in China and the Middle East.
