Discovery apparently disagree \u2014 and have responded by laying off CNN\u2019s chief financial officer and terminating \u201call external marketing\u201d for the streaming service while they determine the best course of action for its future.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/discovery-cnn-plus-marketing-layoffs-jobs-b088c03c-b202-4756-8f5f-e64ee77b5095.html\">report<\/a>, there are several factors influencing the possible outcomes. First, despite projecting two million subscribers in the first year and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/cnn-new-streaming-service-30775bc4-2d25-44fd-a491-3a53ad4b61af.html\">profitability after four<\/a>, CNN+ has only signed on about 150,000 so far \u2014 even with a discounted monthly price offering for those who sign up in the first five weeks. The streaming service\u2019s average daily viewership, according to CNBC, is fewer than 10,000.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fewer than 10,000 people are using CNN+ on a daily basis two weeks into its existence, sources tell CNBC, casting doubt on the future of the app following the combination of Discovery &#038; WarnerMedia.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/20GmjuQafQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/20GmjuQafQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC Now (@CNBCnow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNBCnow\/status\/1513919363312721921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cCNN sought to make a huge splash with CNN+, luring big-name talent from rival news networks, such as Kasie Hunt from NBC News and Chris Wallace from Fox News,\u201d CNBC reported. \u201cBut there is broad skepticism whether there\u2019s enough demand to sustain a stand-alone news streaming service, with entertainment-first options dominating the landscape. Disney+, for instance, posted more than 10 million subscribers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/11\/13\/20963172\/disney-plus-subscribers-10-million-star-wars-marvel-pixar-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on its first day<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second, sources told Axios that CNN+ is not the only streaming service in the works \u2014 and that \u201cWarner Bros. Discovery wants to eventually build one giant service around HBO Max.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, structural changes are already underway. Former CNN CFO Brad Ferrer has been replaced by \u201cNeil Chugani, Discovery\u2019s current CFO for streaming and international, as part of a broader finance team restructuring.\u201d\u00a0Sources predict that other positions are also likely to be streamlined in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>The report also indicated that the decision to launch prior to the CNN\/Warner Bros. Discovery merger may have played a role in the current tensions, noting that if CNN had delayed the launch until afterward, they could have tweaked the service to align better with Discovery\u2019s plans for future offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Critics warned before the launch that CNN+ was likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/cnns-new-subscription-streaming-service-craters-after-launch-big-cuts-coming-reports\/\">crash and burn<\/a>.
