Ron DeSantis is reminding us what can happen when America\u2019s corporate giants stray too far from their lane.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, DeSantis announced that the state legislature would consider dismantling special protections for Disney after the massive corporation began to grandstand over the recently signed Parental Rights in Education law. <\/p>\n<p>The law, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/31\/dont-let-gay-chasten-buttigieg-near-your-children-says-nonexistent-desantis-law\/\">dubiously branded<\/a> the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill by its opponents among Democrats and the corporate press, bars classroom instruction on \u201csexual orientation\u201d and \u201cgender identity\u201d for kids in kindergarten through third grade. Disney condemned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/dont-say-gay-is-popular-you-dont-say-ron-desantis-florida-law-elementary-school-11648849131\">popular<\/a> law and admonished Florida Republicans while at the same time <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/01\/disney-expands-operations-openly-anti-gay-countries-shuns-florida-parental-rights-bill\/\">expanding its operations<\/a> in openly homophobic countries where homosexuality is a crime punishable by death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida\u2019s HB 1557, also known as the \u2018Don\u2019t Say Gay\u2019 bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law. Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that,\u201d the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/statement-from-the-walt-disney-company-on-signing-of-florida-legislation\/\">statement<\/a> following the governor\u2019s signature. \u201cWe are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to Georgia\u2019s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who merely complained when Atlanta-based corporations launched an economic boycott of the state over the legislature\u2019s voter ID law, DeSantis is waging a campaign on behalf of Florida voters to respond in kind to Disney\u2019s attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am announcing today that we are expanding the call of what they are going to be considering this week,\u201d DeSantis said of the legislature\u2019s upcoming special session. \u201cThey will be considering the congressional map, but they also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968, and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"KBh9vzT7rfxGa0wWpPlNVm1geEjYMntA6Us2Hd4XRZckbQO\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In addition to congressional reapportionment, this week&#8217;s special session will include termination of legacy special districts and removal of exemptions from the big tech accountability law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/67sF4E113I\">pic.twitter.com\/67sF4E113I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1516408588234854410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The special district was granted to Disney in May 1967 after the company\u2019s lobbying allowed the entertainment giant to develop 25,000 acres of swampland in remote central Florida. Orange and Osceola Counties at the time didn\u2019t have the resources to welcome the massive project that would eventually become Walt Disney World, so the company was given a special tax district with county-level authority to self-govern.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/miami.cbslocal.com\/2022\/04\/01\/ron-desantis-support-stripping-disney-special-privileges\/\">signaled<\/a> the push for the termination of Disney\u2019s special privileges earlier this month at a press conference in West Palm Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisney has alienated a lot of people now,\u201d DeSantis said after the company <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/30\/disney-executives-admit-of-course-were-grooming-your-children\/\">embraced<\/a> left-wing radicalism on sex. \u201cAnd so the political influence they\u2019re used to wielding, I think has dissipated. And so the question is, why would you want to have special privileges in the law at all? And I don\u2019t think that we should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Proclamation.pdf\">proclamation<\/a> on Tuesday outlining why it was time for Disney\u2019s 55-year-old special treatment from the state to expire, an idea that has already <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoteRandyFine\/status\/1516417533825454083?s=20&#038;t=Z1Oa9OW-t-R22HSBHl3RxA\">drawn support<\/a> from lawmakers. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoteRandyFine\/status\/1516417533825454083?s=20&#038;t=Z1Oa9OW-t-R22HSBHl3RxA\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Randy-Fine-Tweet-on-Disney.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-270917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Randy-Fine-Tweet-on-Disney.jpg 890w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Randy-Fine-Tweet-on-Disney-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Randy-Fine-Tweet-on-Disney-768x386-1.jpg 768w\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The potential termination of its special tax privileges deals a major blow to the company, which operates in Florida. It\u2019s a reminder of the consequences for corporations that insert themselves into politics, weigh into issues that have nothing to do with their business, and wage war on families in an effort to virtue signal. <\/p>\n<p>The purpose of a democratically elected government is to serve constituents, which includes effective pushback against conduct such as Disney\u2019s by using every lever at its disposal.
