The researchers said in the study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/949318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release<\/a> that over half (51.4%) of the participants in the study were diagnosed with at least one psychiatric diagnosis within the last five years and nearly 15% had positive tests showing a breakthrough case of COVID-19.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-ct inline\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 767px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/640\/320\/fatigue-covid.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"Businesswoman sleeping by closing laptop while working during the pandemic.\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>\n      Businesswoman sleeping by closing laptop while working during the pandemic.<br \/>\n      <span class=\"copyright\">(iStock)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Overall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers<\/a> found participants with psychiatric disorders had a 3% increased risk for breakthrough COVID-19 infections in 2021 compared to those without a psychiatric history, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/949318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The investigators report that the risk was higher for those over 65 years old. According to the release, those in the 65+ age group who had substance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\/drug-and-substance-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abuse<\/a> issues had a 24% higher risk for a breakthrough case and those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychotic<\/a> disorders had a 23% higher risk. The report found those with bipolar disorder were 16% more likely to get a breakthrough infection, while those with an adjustment disorder had a 14 % risk. The individuals with anxiety conditions had a 12% higher chance compared to those who did not have a psychiatric condition, the report said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/mysterious-liver-illness-seen-in-kids-in-us-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>MYSTERIOUS LIVER ILLNESS SEEN IN KIDS IN US, EUROPE<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study also noted the younger cohort, (those individuals under 65 years old), with a psychiatric disorder had an increased risk of up to 11% of developing a breakthrough COVID-19 case, compared to those without a psychiatric history.\u202f \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the younger group, the findings showed participants with a substance abuse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disorder<\/a> were 11% more likely to develop a breakthrough case, while participants with adjustment disorder had an increased risk of 9% compared to\u00a0peers without a psychiatric diagnosis. TheNu study also found those under 65 with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder had a 4% and 3% increased chance of getting COVID-19, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-ct inline\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 767px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/640\/320\/iStock-1165981632.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"Image of a nurse comforter an elderly patient.\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>\n      Image of a nurse comforter an elderly patient.<br \/>\n      <span class=\"copyright\">(iStock)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The researchers said the increased risk of breakthrough cases in individuals with psychiatric disorders (3% to 16%) was comparable to the increased incidence of breakthrough infection that was seen in individuals with certain physical conditions (7% to 23%) such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and kidney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disease<\/a>, the study said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/california-delays-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-schoolchildren-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CALIFORNIA DELAYS COVID-19 VACCINE MANDATE FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN UNTIL 2023<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings indicate that individuals with psychiatric disorders may be a high-risk group for COVID-19 and that this group should be prioritized for booster vaccinations and other critical preventive efforts, including increased SARS-CoV-2 screening, public health campaigns, or COVID-19 discussions during clinical care,&#8221; The investigators also said the findings might be related to risky behaviors that are often associated with some conditions, according to the release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/kristen.nishimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nishimi<\/a>, who is the first author of the study, also suggested in the release that another possible explanation for the findings is that older adults with psychiatric disorders typically receive frequent in \u2013person treatment and said this &#8220;could increase their interactions with the health care system.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/aoife.odonovan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aoife O\u2019Donovan<\/a>, PhD, of the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/weill.ucsf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences<\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.va.gov\/san-francisco-health-care\/__;!!LQC6Cpwp!5WpYhZyyRkb_i2uUHBCpxPhcbETGGRFCsDmhku-zRW8cN9G8OO7q2-kpyt_90v0DKqG6uA%24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Francisco VA Health Care System<\/a> said in the release, &#8220;Our research suggests that increased breakthrough infections in people with psychiatric disorders cannot be entirely explained by socio-demographic factors or pre-existing conditions.&#8221;\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Donovan, who is the senior author of the study also said, &#8220;It\u2019s possible that immunity following vaccination wanes more quickly or more strongly for people with psychiatric disorders and\/or they could have less protection to newer variants,&#8221;
