The issues will likely play a big role in Republican midterm messaging.<\/p>\n<p>Republican state Senator Ty Masterson said that Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed the measure because she is \u201clargely controlled by the hard left,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-politics-and-policy\/kansas-governor-vetoes-bills-trans-athletes-parental-rights-rcna24806\">NBC News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about protecting the woman who worked and trained all her life and should not have her hard work wiped out by being forced to compete on unlevel playing fields,\u201d Masterson said.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly herself said that Republicans were politically driven in pushing the measures and that the bill banning biological males from women\u2019s sports was \u201cdivisive\u201d and would harm the state\u2019s economy, the publication reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s harmful to students and their families, and it\u2019s bad for business,\u201d said Kelly, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kansas-government-and-politics-321b19c681fe78be837bde945c0f6aa4\">who vetoed<\/a> a similar bill last year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thank you Kansas Governor Laura Kelly for vetoing two anti-LGBTQ bills. Both cynically politicize our lives to score votes:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q9HSJlvIaZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/Q9HSJlvIaZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 National Center for Transgender Equality (@TransEquality) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TransEquality\/status\/1516148813714673664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 18, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kansas Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt, Kelly\u2019s presumed gubernatorial opponent, has said that he would sign the bill.<\/p>\n<p>At least 29 states in the U.S. have made moves to craft or pass legislation banning biological males from women\u2019s sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legislation-affecting-lgbtq-rights-across-country\">according to data compiled<\/a> by the American Civil Liberties Union.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican-backed legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/12\/here-are-the-states-that-want-to-ban-trans-surgeries-for-minors\/\">bans minors<\/a> from obtaining transgender surgeries and hormones \u2014 medical interventions that advocates and many in the legacy media <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/14\/walt-heyer-lgbtQ-transgender\/\">frame<\/a> as \u201cgender-affirming medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden urged lawmakers to enact the radically progressive Equality Act, criticizing the \u201conslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I\u2019ll always have your back as your president so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential,\u201d Biden added.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most recently, Oklahoma Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/oklahoma-governor-signs-bill-banning-biological-males-from-womens-sports\">signed a bill<\/a> on March 30 banning biological males from women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Stitt called the legislation \u201ccommon sense,\u201d pointing to the physiological advantages that biological men have over women, and thanked legislators for \u201cdoing the hard work\u201d to put the bill on his desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to sports and athletics, girls should compete against girls,\u201d he said. \u201cBoys should compete against boys. And let\u2019s be very clear. That\u2019s all this bill says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only a few days earlier, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed the state\u2019s Parental Rights in Education legislation, a bill banning classroom discussions of gender identity and sexual orientation for little children.<\/p>\n<p>The governor promised that parents have a \u201cfundamental\u201d role in the education, upbringing, and healthcare of their children, insisting that he will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-undeterred-by-disney-criticism-of-florida-parental-rights-bill\">never cave to pressure<\/a> from outside groups like Disney on this matter. (Disclosure: The Daily Wire has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/videos\/introducing-dw-kids\">announced<\/a> plans for kids entertainment content.)<\/p>\n<p>The bill has been wildly misrepresented as \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d legislation by critics who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/floridas-lgbtq-bill-is-being-wildly-misrepresented-here-are-the-facts\">most notably taken issue<\/a> with HB 1557\u2019s statement that\u00a0\u201cclassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in kindergarten are typically five years old, while third graders generally are eight or nine years old.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere in the legislation is the word \u201cgay\u201d mentioned, though the word \u201cparent\u201d is mentioned 32 times and the word \u201cparental\u201d is mentioned eight times.
