Madison Cawthorn keeps a large supply of alcohol in his Hendersonville, North Carolina district office, according to a former staffer who is accusing him of workers\u2019 rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>Cawthorn\u2019s Hendersonville office has \u201cmore liquor bottles than water bottles,\u201d former aide Lisa Wiggins claimed. Wiggins accused the first-term Republican of serially mismanaging his offices, including a violation of federal law, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/firemadison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/phone-20220412-180610-8286741137-1.mp4\">recorded<\/a> phone call with an organization backing one of his primary opponents. Wiggins worked for Cawthorn as a campaign events coordinator in 2020 and as a district caseworker in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legistorm.com\/person\/bio\/392259\/Lisa_S_Wiggins.html\">according<\/a> to Legistorm.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations were first <a href=\"https:\/\/smokymountainnews.com\/news\/item\/33441-complaint-filed-against-cawthorn-by-fired-staffer\">reported<\/a> by Smoky Mountain News.<\/p>\n<p>The Family and Medical Leave Act requires that federal employers provide employees with up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave a year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/topic\/benefits-leave\/fmla\">according<\/a> to the Department of Labor. That leave may be used for events such as the care of a spouse with a pressing health condition. Wiggins\u2019 husband suffered a heart attack, but Cawthorn refused to let her take time off, according to the recording. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/09\/madison-cawthorn-charged-driving-revoked-license\/\">(RELATED: Rep. Madison Cawthorn Charged With Driving With Revoked License, Faces Up To 20 Days In Jail)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy uncle passed, and my husband had a heart attack, all in the same week,\u201d Wiggins said in the recording, adding that she would pursue \u201clitigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she added, the case would not be public \u201cbecause it goes through a different dynamic than it would the regular court setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy attorney is on Capitol Hill,\u201d Wiggins explained, in an apparent reference to the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights (OCWR). The individual spreading these disgusting allegations is currently working for a primary opponent of Congressman Cawthorn. We believe these comments potentially amount to defamation of character, and are exploring options to ensure the Congressman\u2019s name emerges from these slanderous remarks unscathed,\u201d a spokesperson for Cawthorn said in a statement to the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>Wiggins added that Cawthorn closed all of his district offices except for the main one in Hendersonville, forcing constituents to travel up to five hours to meet with him. Cawthorn <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5931815\/madison-cawthorn-post-trump\/\">explained<\/a> in a January 2021 email to colleagues that he \u201cbuilt [his] staff around comms rather than legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cawthorn reportedly drew a previous ethics complaint in July 2021 after a spat with a staffer for Republican West Virginia Rep. David McKinley. The two Republicans later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/07\/30\/cawthorn-mckinley-gop-house-floor-501796\">feuded<\/a> on the House floor.
