Xian\u2019s municipal \u201canti-epidemic command center\u201d issued a press release announcing the lockdown on the night of April 15, or mere hours before the restrictions went into effect starting at 12:01 am on April 16. (Photo by AFP)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Xi\u2019an\u2019s latest movement restrictions came as a surprise to many of the city\u2019s residents, in part because the community had only just emerged from the admittedly \u201ctough days\u201d of a month-long Chinese coronavirus lockdown from December 2021 to January 2022, as acknowledged by the Communist Party-run <em>Global Times<\/em> on April 16.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of Xi\u2019an, at least eight other Chinese cities and counties have entered new Chinese coronavirus lockdowns over the past month. A separate article by the <em>Global Times<\/em> on April 17 attempted to paint the nationwide lockdowns as anything but, carefully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202204\/1259539.shtml\">categorizing<\/a> affected residents as \u201cunder static management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[U]nlike city lockdowns that cause massive standstills of work and life, the measures are specified and targeted at different local situations, trying to minimize the impact on people\u2019s daily activities,\u201d the newspaper claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The publication named several Chinese communities that imposed lockdowns on their populaces in recent days, writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>On Sunday [April 17], the main city of Wuhu, East China\u2019s Anhui Province, temporarily implemented static management and launched nucleic acid testing for all residents in the city after one positive case was found on Saturday [April 16].<\/p>\n<p>Shanghai\u2019s Pudong and Jiading districts also issued notices on Friday [April 15] and Saturday [April 16] respectively to adopt the prevention and control measures of \u201cstatic management of the whole region and nucleic acid testing of all personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Also, cities and counties in Northwest China\u2019s Qinghai Province, Northwest China\u2019s Shaanxi Province, and East China\u2019s Jiangsu Province have issued the similar notice against the Omicron in recent days.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A Chinese coronavirus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/04\/11\/videos-shanghai-residents-trapped-in-lockdown-scream-from-their-windows-fight-over-limited-food\/\">lockdown<\/a> of all of Shanghai \u2014 which is China\u2019s most densely-populated metropolis and home to nearly 26 million inhabitants \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/shanghai-lockdown-deepens-after-new-surge-asymptomatic-cases-2022-04-05\/\">launched<\/a> on April 5 and continued unabated at press time on Monday, April 18.
