Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/Keith-Grayson-2.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Superstar DJ Kay Slay, who worked with the likes of Busta Rhymes and Kendrick Lamar, died Sunday at the age of 55 following complications from a reported lengthy battle with COVID-19, friends and family shared.<\/p>\n<p>The family of the hip hop pioneer, born Keith Grayson, released a statement through the New York radio station \u2014 where he hosted a show called \u201cThe Drama Hour\u201d for more than two decades \u2014 announcing the passing of their loved one, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/18\/nyc-hip-hop-legend-dj-kay-slay-dies-of-covid-at-55\/\">reported<\/a> the New York Post in a piece published Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hearts are broken by the passing of Keith Grayson, professionally known as DJ Kay Slay,\u201d the Grayson family\u2019s statement read. \u201cA dominant figure in Hip Hop culture with millions of fans worldwide, DJ Kay Slay will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will transcend generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn memory of DJ Kay Slay, our family wishes to thank all of his friends, fans, and supporters for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time,\u201d the statement added. \u201cWe ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve this tragic loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">An official statement from The Grayson Family on the passing of Keith Grayson aka DJ Kay Slay: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nUZn55k3yh\">pic.twitter.com\/nUZn55k3yh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 HOT 97 (@HOT97) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HOT97\/status\/1516024911470469123?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 18, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The New York Radio <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HOT97\/status\/1516031289710682118?s=20&#038;t=52P7wO4Q6Lsgk4qXT0m3BQ\">station Hot 97<\/a> also shared a tribute to the mixtape artist following news of his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHot 97 is shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved DJ Kay Slay,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWe cherish the many memories created through the twenty-plus years he dedicated to the \u2018Drama Hour.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cultural icon, the Streetsweeper Kay Slay was more than just a DJ to us he was family and a vital part of what made Hot 97 the successful station it is today,\u201d the statement added. \u201cOur hearts go out to his family, friends and fans worldwide and we will always and forever celebrate the Drama King\u2019s Legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet noted that a week before the rapper\u2019s passing, longtime music manager Wack 100 gave an update to fans on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CcTYsaevOoy\/\">Instagram<\/a>\u00a0that the hitmaker was \u201cstill fighting\u201d and needed prayers \u2014 after he had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/dj-kay-slay-reportedly-hospitalized-covid-19-1235016303\/\">previously shared<\/a> in January that the superstar had been put on a ventilator battling COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUPDATE!!,\u201d the post read. \u201c@djkayslay still fighting. He\u2019s been off the #ECMO machine for couple weeks now. Let\u2019s continue our prayers as our brother continues to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DJ Kay Slay first was noticed in his career as a graffiti artist who later dabbled in hip-hop on the side.
