\/><\/div>\n<p>Virginia school officials \u201cseverely harassed and discriminated against\u201d an assistant principal who raised concerns about mandatory \u201canti-racism\u201d teacher training, a new lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>Former public school administrator Emily Mais is suing the Albermarle County School Board, represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), accusing the school board of creating a racially hostile work environment that ultimately forced her to leave her job in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The school officials \u201cconstructively discharged\u201d Mais by creating a \u201chostile environment where they repeatedly dismissed her complaints,\u201d ADF said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/mais-v-albemarle-county-school-board\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the \u201cracially harassing and abusive comments\u201d that her colleagues made about her included calling her, \u201cthat white racist b****\u201d and \u201cthat two-faced racist b****,\u201d according the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of training faculty members to embrace students of all races, Albemarle County school officials are using a curriculum that promotes racial discrimination,\u201d said ADF Senior Counsel Kate Anderson, director of the ADF Center for Parental Rights. \u201cThe training sets up a classic Catch-22: It encourages all staff members to \u2018speak their truth,\u2019 but when a white person like Emily raises concerns about the divisive content, she is deemed a racist in need of further \u2018anti-racism\u2019 instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily believes every person is made in the image of God and entitled to equal treatment and respect and refuses to participate in using harmful ideology to indoctrinate students, teachers, or staff,\u201d Anderson added.<\/p>\n<p>Mais, who formerly served as an elementary art teacher for seven years, had raised concerns about the Agnor-Hurt Elementary School\u2019s \u201canti-racism\u201d teacher training calling for differential treatment based on race, the lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>That training is based on the book\u00a0\u00a0\u201cCourageous Conversations About Race,\u201d ADF said, and\u00a0attributes both positive and negative characteristics to people based on race, such as teaching that only the \u201cdominant race\u201d (white people) can commit acts of racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe district is using the curriculum even though the Virginia superintendent of public instruction has expressly recognized that the \u2018Courageous Conversations\u2019 book promotes inherently divisive concepts that are harmful to students and staff members and is an example of materials based on critical race theory that are being used in Virginia schools,\u201d ADF said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The reported vitriol against Mais began when she spoke up in a racial training session and accidentally said \u201ccolored people\u201d instead of \u201cpeople of color,\u201d according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>She immediately corrected herself and apologized, the lawsuit said, but Sheila Avery, a teacher\u2019s aide who is black, reportedly verbally attacked Mais for this \u201cslip of the tongue\u201d and accused Mais of \u201cspeaking like old racists who told people of color to go to the back of the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avery would later also tell Mais that \u201cpeople of color\u201d was not an appropriate phrase, the lawsuit notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Avery\u2019s verbal abuse was so severe that Ms. Mais received multiple communications during the training session and following it from other staff members expressing their support for her and their alarm at how unprofessional Ms. Avery\u2019s response to her was,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>Mais discovered later that Avery and her friends were \u201copenly slandering\u201d her at work, \u201ccursing about her and calling her vulgar names at work, telling other employees she was a racist and that she intentionally demeaned black people, and trying to turn other employees against her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And during a disciplinary meeting with school officials, the lawsuit said, she was told that those white teachers who were afraid to speak out against the anti-racism policy and training \u201cshould be afraid to speak if what they were thinking was not \u2018appropriate.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mais understood this to mean that \u201cthe Division was in fact policing white participants\u2019 speech and was prepared to retaliate against any criticism of its approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed last week in the\u00a0Albemarle County Circuit Court.<\/p>\n<p>Nine parents and eight minors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2021\/12\/22\/exclusive-parents-accuse-virginia-school-district-of-teaching-students-to-discriminate-based-on-race\/\">also alleged in a December lawsuit<\/a> that Albemarle County Public Schools was indoctrinating students with an ideology that\u00a0\u201cteaches children to affirmatively discriminate based on race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ADF also represented the plaintiffs in this case, which repeatedly refers to\u00a0Albemarle County Public Schools\u2019 \u201cAnti-Racism Policy\u201d \u2014 a policy with a stated purpose of eliminating \u201call forms of racism\u201d in the school system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendants claim that they want to stand against racism,\u201d the lawsuit said. \u201cBut rather than eliminate racism from the school district, defendants have done the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFar from exploring ideas or philosophies surrounding justice and reconciliation, that ideology fosters racial division, racial stereotyping, and racial hostility,\u201d the lawsuit continued. \u201cSo does the policy.
