Cori Bush (D-MO) has spent more than $300,000 for private security over the past election cycle, campaign finance documents generated Monday show, despite her support for \u201cdefund the police.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A list of itemized expenditures from Cori Bush for Congress on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00638767\/1586844\/sb\/ALL\"><span>Federal Election Commission<\/span><\/a><span> website show that the progressive lawmaker spent $70,489 on \u201cSecurity Services\u201d \u2014 including $50,489 to Peace Security, $15,000 to Cortney Merritts, and $5,000 to Nathaniel Davis. The expenditures \u2014 which occurred during the first quarter of 2022 \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00638767&#038;two_year_transaction_period=2022&#038;disbursement_description=security\"><span>add<\/span><\/a><span> to the $233,663 that Bush spent on security services in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bush has therefore spent $304,152 for security over the past election cycle, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/cori-bush-surpasses-300k-spent-private-security-she-continues-calls-defund-police\"><span>Fox News<\/span><\/a><span> observed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bush \u2014 a proponent of the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement \u2014 was pressed on her security expenditures last August during an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cori-bush-spent-70000-on-private-security-now-shes-doubling-down-on-defunding-the-police\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span> with CBS News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou faced some criticism in recent weeks over your push to defund the police,\u201d one of the anchors noted. \u201cCampaign records show that you spent roughly $70,000 on private security, and some critics say that move is hypocritical. What\u2019s your response to those critics?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life,\u201d Bush replied after stating that she experiences death threats from white supremacists. \u201cAnd I have too much work to do. There are too many people that need help right now for me to allow that. So if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend ten more dollars on it, you know what? I get to be here, to do the work. So suck it up. And defunding the police has to happen; we need to defund the police and put that money into social safety nets, because we\u2019re trying to save lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bush supports \u201cdefund the police\u201d despite pressure from other Democrats. Bush told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/cori-bush-defund-police-2022-midterms-f78a07b5-40ae-42e2-ba0e-e50d205a1dd9.html\"><span>Axios<\/span><\/a><span> in February that she has had \u201ccolleagues walk up to me\u201d and say \u201cdefund the police\u201d does not help in their districts. The lawmaker did not name to whom she was referring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018Defund the police\u2019 is not the problem,\u201d she added. \u201cWe dangled the carrot in front of people\u2019s faces and said we can get it done and that Democrats deliver, when we haven\u2019t totally delivered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, leading Democrats have pushed back against Bush and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/defund-the-police-is-dead-nancy-pelosi-says-with-all-the-respect-in-the-world-cori-bushs-stance-is-not-the-partys-position\"><span>distanced<\/span><\/a><span> themselves from \u201cdefund the police\u201d \u2014 a movement that gained popularity following the death of George Floyd in May 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith all the respect in the world for Cori Bush, that is not the position of the Democratic Party,\u201d House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said about the slogan earlier this year. \u201cCommunity safety, to protect and defend in every way, is our oath of office.
