A spokesperson for The Washington Post confirmed that the screen grab is fake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Fact Check:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Facebook post features a screen grab of what appears to be an article from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a> titled \u201cChina is forcing hundreds of millions of new trees to exist every year.\u201d The image includes a photo of a forest. \u201cHow is this for \u2018Western\u2019 propaganda lunacy,\u201d reads part of the post\u2019s caption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another iteration of the post was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LorenaDyson\/status\/1500767357941301256\"><span>shared on Twitter<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe plight of the oppressed trees in #China,\u201d its caption reads. \u201cOur day wouldn\u2019t be complete without another foolish headline from WP that we can lampoon all day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The screenshot is digitally fabricated. The article does not appear on The Washington Post\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/search\/?query=%E2%80%9CChina+is+forcing+hundreds+of+millions+of+new+trees+to+exist+every+year%E2%80%9D&#038;btn-search=&#038;facets=%7B%22time%22%3A%22all%22%2C%22sort%22%3A%22relevancy%22%2C%22section%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22author%22%3A%5B%5D%7D\"><span>website<\/span><\/a>, or on<span> the news outlet\u2019s verified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=China%20is%20forcing%20hundreds%20of%20millions%20of%20news%20trees%20to%20exist%20every%20year%20%20(from%3Awashingtonpost)&#038;src=typed_query\"><span>Twitter<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/page\/6250307292\/search\/?q=China%20is%20forcing%20hundreds%20of%20millions%20of%20new%20trees%20to%20exist%20every%20year%20\"><span>Facebook<\/span><\/a><span> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/washingtonpost\/\"><span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> accounts.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Post did not run a story with that headline,\u201d Naseem Amini, a spokesperson for The Washing<\/span><span>ton Post, told Check Your Fact via email. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/12\/18\/fact-check-china-global-carbon-emissions-90-percent\/\">(RELATED: Does China Produce 90% Of Global Carbon Emissions?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While there is no evidence The Washington Post published such an article, China did pledge last year to plant around 36,000 square kilometers of trees by 2025 to combat climate change and protect natural habitats, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-step-up-tree-planting-campaign-help-reach-net-zero-2021-08-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>This is not the first time misinformation has been spread about China.
