Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive colleagues from New York argued against increasing the police presence in New York City\u2019s subway system in a 2019 letter.<\/p>\n<p>AOC argued MTA\u2019s focus should be on maintaining subways and bus services instead of increasing the police presence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn our view, desperately needed resources would be better invested in subway, bus, maintenance and service improvements,\u201d the\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAOC\/status\/1206993080156602371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0sent to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said. \u201cWe are urging the MTA to divest from this current model of criminalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter was written in response to Cuomo\u2019s plan to hire additional police officers to patrol the subways to deal with widespread violence and fare evasion. However, Cuomo\u2019s plan was ultimately put on\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/02\/15\/mta-revives-plan-to-hire-500-cops-that-was-halted-by-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold<\/a>\u00a0when the coronavirus pandemic hit in early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>AOC\u2019s letter is under increased scrutiny after a shooter shot and injured at least 30 people on a New York subway. The letter cited \u201chistoric racial disparities in enforcement\u201d and said an increased police presence would harm \u201ccommunities of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cInstead of patrolling the turnstile, existing police officers should focus on the threats faced by MTA employees,\u201d the letter\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAOC\/status\/1206993080156602371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continued<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPunishing the poor does not create a safer environment. Instead it threatens the very foundation of our community,\u201d AOC said in a\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAOC\/status\/1206993080156602371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a>\u00a0that included the letter. \u201cThat is why my New York colleagues and I wrote a letter to @NYGovCuomo asking him to help put an end to MTA\u2019s dangerous policing policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Punishing the poor does not create a safer environment.
