Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/diariodecuba.com\/cuba\/1619003031_30349.html\">lying<\/a> to them about providing air support, failed in that mission, subjecting them to imprisonment and torture in Fidel Castro\u2019s Cuba. It currently exists in America as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayofpigsbrigade2506.com\/\">Bay of Pigs Veterans Association<\/a> and operates a museum in Miami, Florida, that passes on the history of the movement to new generations of Cuban-Americans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The brigade\u2019s Christian roots \u2013 its slogan is \u201cGod, Fatherland, and Liberty\u201d \u2013 and the active participation of members of the Catholic clergy in the attempt to liberate the island particularly resonate today as the enduring Castro regime attempts to subdue a powerful protest movement intricately tied to Church leaders.<\/p>\n<p>On July 11, 2021, an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/08\/03\/study-187000-cubans-participated-protests-july\/\">187,000<\/a> Cubans \u2013 though many suggest the number was far higher \u2013 took the streets of nearly every municipality in the country to demand an end to communism. Among them were many Christians, including clergymen who suffered severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/07\/12\/report-communists-beat-dissident-cuban-priest-drag-streets\/\">beatings<\/a> at the hands of Communist Party state security forces \u2013 fueling what experts tell Breitbart News is an intensified crackdown on Christianity and other key Cuban faiths, notably the Yoruba Afro-Cuban religion, as an attempt to subdue political dissidence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17134664\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Cuba-Riot-Police.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17134664 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Cuba-Riot-Police.jpg\" alt=\"Riot police walk the streets after a demonstration against the government of President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Arroyo Naranjo Municipality, Havana on July 12, 2021. - Cuba on Monday blamed a \" policy of economic suffocation \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Riot police walk the streets after nationwide protests against communism in Arroyo Naranjo Municipality, Havana on July 12, 2021. (YAMIL LAGE\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the spotlight of American corporate media has moved on to Ukraine \u2013 a cause the Cuban exile community enthusiastically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2022\/03\/07\/exclusive-cuban-americans-ex-political-prisoners-rally-in-miami-for-ukraine\/\">supports<\/a> given Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s bankrolling of the Castro regime \u2013 Cubans have not stopped protesting, often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/11\/16\/cuba-nuns-priests-biggest-protests-july\/\">led<\/a> by priests, nuns, and pastors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Ricardo S\u00e1nchez was 19 when he served as a paratrooper in what he called in conversation with Breitbart News \u201cour event.\u201d He recalled Christian faith as pervasive among the members of the brigade, who relied on a team of priests for \u201cspiritual support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe slogan of the brigade is \u2018God, Fatherland, and Liberty.\u2019 That was very present. We had with us, who disembarked with us \u2013 in my case, that I was a paratrooper, who jumped with us \u2013 in Cuba several priests. One paratrooper and, if I\u2019m remembering correctly, three or four disembarked in Gir\u00f3n,\u201d he explained, referring to the beach on Bay of Pigs that hosted the invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The one paratrooper has become a legendary hero of the Cuban exile community: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayofpigsbrigade2506.com\/copy-of-the-members\">Father Sergio Carrillo<\/a>\u00a0who, at 26, joined the 2506 Brigade\u2019s paratroopers and spent two years imprisoned in Cuba for his participation. (Frances Martel\/Breitbart News)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez said he was not among those with the highest religious fervor upon joining the brigade, but his experience within it made him as close to a convert as someone already raised Catholic could be.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t convert because my family raised me [in Catholicism], but [I am] someone who discovered the value of religious principles there [in Bay of Pigs] through examples of people who I saw who were Christians and Catholic,\u201d S\u00e1nchez told Breitbart News. \u201cI am a Catholic, my father raised me a Catholic, but in the years that I was in Cuba I was in and out of the Church, in and out of Mass, there was no depth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to understand the value of religious principles, and the daily presence of religious principles \u2013 not just using it as a patch \u2013 I learned that there,\u201d he said, watching fellow prisoners endure tremendous sacrifices under communist control and live their lives in an actively Christian way outside of church attendance and social engagements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt goes far beyond going to church, it penetrates your personal life,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said, later adding, \u201cI think there were many there that had that same experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Fidel Castro morphing Cuba into a repressive atheist state, the island was one of the world\u2019s most Christian countries. Legendary poet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.aleteia.org\/2020\/02\/03\/los-destellos-cristianos-en-el-pensamiento-de-jose-marti\/\">Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed<\/a>, embraced by both Cubans and the communist regime as the country\u2019s greatest founding father, was enthusiastically Christian, though skeptical of religious institutions. The Catholic Church was a core pillar of civil society and remained so, in a distorted state, for many years under the Castro family, as multiple popes visited the island and embraced the Castros while believers languished in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2015\/09\/24\/dissident-group-250-cubans-arrested-during-pope-francis-visit\/\">political prison<\/a> or endured brutal assaults.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20670470\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AP530111173.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20670470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AP530111173.jpeg\" alt=\"View of crowd with church dignitaries from Mexico and Cuba at coronation ceremony in Havana on Jan. 11, 1953. (AP Photo)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fidel Castro appeared to understand very early on the contagious power of Christianity to embolden individuals to resist tyranny.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe struggle to defend Christianity from a regime that progressively revealed itself to be militantly atheist was a major inspiration for the Cuban Resistance,\u201d Orlando Guti\u00e9rrez-Boronat, the\u00a0co-founder and spokesman for the dissident organization the Cuban Democratic Directorate (<em>Directorio<\/em>), explained to Breitbart News. \u201cCastroite Communism knew that to build a Soviet satellite state they had to destroy the ancient spiritual traditions of the Cuban people. In many ways then, the struggle against Communism in Cuba was a spiritual one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cross and the national flag of Cuba were the glorious symbols of Brigade 2506: a Cuban Republic founded on Christian principles,\u201d he highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez recalled to Breitbart News attending the first major event Fidel Castro organized following the collapse of the administration of former President Fulgencio Batista: a veneration of Our Lady of Charity, the matron saint of Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first event was an event in which they brought Our Lady of Charity to Havana, an enormous multitude showed up there. And Fidel Castro showed up to visit, to recognize, the cardinal offering that Mass,\u201d S\u00e1nchez recalled. \u201cAmong others, I was there. I was about 18 years old, 17-18. So Fidel was very careful not to mess with the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater \u2013 six, seven, eight months later \u2013 after taking power and taking power decisively, he did attack zealously, he began intervening in the schools a year later, religious schools including Catholic, and he began expelling a group of priests from Cuba,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cThey took a lot of care because the Cuban population, whether due to history or belief, recognized itself as a religious population, majority Catholic, but that includes all types of religions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, after decades of brutal atheist repression of all religions, Christianity persists in Cuba and appears to have retaken a leadership role in anti-communist resistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReligious repression in Cuba is structured and designed very meticulously. It affects all religions and control all aspects that can affect the exercise of religion,\u201d Javier Larrondo, the president of the human rights NGO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonersdefenders.org\/\">Cuban Prisoners Defenders<\/a>, explained to Breitbart News in a conversation this week. (AP Photo\/Ramon Espinosa)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe repression of rights to religious liberty is exerted by a department of the Communist Party known as the Office of Religious Affairs [OAR] and, for each different creed, the regime has created parallel government organizations that try to replace the authentically religious institutions,\u201d Larrondo detailed. \u201cIt is a way of diminishing them. Examples of this are the Islamic League of Cuba, the Council of Churches, or the Cultural Yoruba Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe repressive reality of religious people is such that 100 percent of religious people suffer diverse repressive acts,\u201d Larrondo asserted, \u201cfrom the mildest level, threats, to the impeding of religious practices as punishment, to citations, detentions, and beatings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the OAR has existed for decades, human rights experts have observed a marked uptick in religious repression since last July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the July 11 uprising, the systemic persecution of the Catholic Church, Christians in general, and other persons from various faith and belief traditions takes on a new dimension in Cuban society,\u201d Jason Poblete, an international fundamental rights lawyer and president of the NGO Global Liberty Alliance, told Breitbart News. \u201cWe saw this in other nations in transitions at the end of the Cold War, such as Poland. It is not the same as the Polish Solidarity movement, but unique to Cuba and one with great potential to be a force for change in Cuban civil society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Global Liberty Alliance has championed the causes of Cuban dissidents and political prisoners from all walks of society. The organization was among the first to report the disappearance of Father Castor \u00c1lvarez on July 11 for peacefully protesting. Cuban state security agents beat and dragged \u00c1lvarez through the streets of his native Camag\u00fcey before his arrest, leaving him with an overt head wound.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 ALERT\ud83d\udea8 According to Catholic Church officials in Cuba the secret police, after a brutal beating, unlawfully detained Father Castor. That is why we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globallibertyalliance.org\/gla-news\/cuba-civil-society-leaders-visit-us-policymakers\">been<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/476174988\/2020-8-ORA-Pompeo-Sanctions-Request-Signed-Copy\">urging<\/a> the U.S. government to support them in many ways, including by imposing sanctions on the Religion Police, its officials, and family members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brutal beating of Father \u00c1lvarez has done little to stop Christians on the island from continuing to protest. In November, the largest protests since July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/11\/16\/cuba-nuns-priests-biggest-protests-july\/\">took place<\/a>, led in many municipalities by priests and nuns. The head of the Ladies in White organization \u2013 a group of women whose loved ones are political prisoners whose sole act of protest is attending Catholic Mass \u2013 has been arrested on a nearly weekly basis for much of the past year. Berta Soler was last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/en\/2022\/04\/11\/the-cuban-dictatorship-once-again-arrested-berta-soler-leader-of-the-ladies-in-white\/\">arrested<\/a> on Palm Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Father Kenny Fern\u00e1ndez, a vocal opponent of the communist regime, revealed the Party had <a href=\"https:\/\/diariodecuba.com\/derechos-humanos\/1649688166_38738.html\">blocked<\/a> his attempts to obtain legal permits for a Stations of the Cross procession in Mayabeque, despite receiving such permission in the past, and was told explicitly, \u201cmy publications and actions contrary to their politics\u201d resulted in the revocation of permission.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Negaron TODOS los permisos de Viacrucis por la calle:<\/p>\n<p>El PCC me ha notificado que por mis publicaciones y acciones contrarias a sus pol\u00edticas quedan prohibidos los Viacrucis por la calle en Madruga, Aguacate, Catalina y Pipi\u00e1n. <\/p>\n<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 les parece?<\/p>\n<p>(Adjunto fotos de a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AldpxpCulb\">pic.twitter.com\/AldpxpCulb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \ud83c\uddfaKenny FD Cuba\ud83c\uddfa (@kennyfd1985) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kennyfd1985\/status\/1512836190294188033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The repression of increasingly loud Christian dissident voices in Cuba has not put a damper on S\u00e1nchez\u2019s optimism. The very fact that the July 11 protests occurred at all, he told Breitbart News, means something in the Communist Party has irrevocably broken.<\/p>\n<p>I was very enthused by what happened on July 11 and my theory on this is that Fidel Castro\u2019s control over Cuba started by using your neighbor, started by using your friend, started by using your family to control you,\u201d S\u00e1nchez explained. \u201cHe created what was called <em>los comites de defensa<\/em>\u00a0[the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, neighborhood civilian espionage units] and they were constantly telling on people, accusing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever on July 11, for the first time in a long time, 50-something years, they [the regime leaders] were not aware of what was going to happen. It was totally organic.
