President Joe Biden suspended new federal oil and gas leases on public lands on his first day in office, actively <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/11\/joe-biden-could-bring-down-gas-prices-tomorrow-hes-choosing-not-to\/\">suppressing production<\/a> since his inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 144,000 acres will be auctioned off for drilling, an 80 percent drop from what was under evaluation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/interior-department-announces-significantly-reformed-onshore-oil-and-gas-lease-sales\">according<\/a> to a department press release. The agency will also spike royalty rates 50 percent, from 12.5 percent to 18.75 percent of the extracted product\u2019s value, rising prices for domestic production at a time Americans face the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&#038;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&#038;f=m\">record bills<\/a> at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen Sgamma, the president of the Denver-based industry trade group Western Energy Alliance, called the department\u2019s changes to the federal oil and gas program a political play unlikely to reduce prices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we\u2019re glad to see [Bureau of Land Management] is finally going to announce a sale, the extreme reduction of acreage by 80 percent, after a year and a quarter without a single sale, is unwarranted and does nothing to show that the administration takes high energy prices seriously,\u201d Sgamma said in a statement, adding the sales considered were already analyzed and approved under the Trump administration. \u201cThis administration has decided to make leasing and production a political football, and Americans are paying the price at the pump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Higher energy costs quickly ripple across the entire economy, raising the costs of goods in manufacturing and transportation. On Wednesday, the latest numbers from the Department of Labor <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/12\/bidenflation-reaches-four-decade-high-after-climbing-8-5-percent-since-last-march\/\">revealed<\/a> inflation at a 40-year high. Drilling on federal lands is already more expensive than on private land. <\/p>\n<p>Larry Behrens, communications director for the energy non-profit Power the Future, said the timing of the administration\u2019s announcement was no coincidence. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a reason this announcement came just before the Easter holiday: it is another band-aid that won\u2019t stop the bleeding from Joe Biden\u2019s self-inflicted wound,\u201d Behrens said. \u201cThis latest offering is an 80 percent reduction in available land coupled with a new oil tax thrown at producers to try and escape blame for soaring gas prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behrens warned the administration will amplify its <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/18\/democrats-big-oil-hearings-gas-prices-joe-biden\/\">claims<\/a> of corporate price gouging once prices, inflated by 15 months of hostile White House regulation, fail to come down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen these policy peanuts offered by Washington don\u2019t turn around massive gas prices or 40-year high inflation, the President will again try to blame energy workers for not producing enough,\u201d Behrens told The Federalist. \u201cYou don\u2019t reclaim American energy independence by giving only 20 percent, and America\u2019s struggling families will continue to pay the price for Biden\u2019s latest political stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Biden has tapped the nation\u2019s emergency petroleum reserves to artificially bring down gas prices set by the market. The president <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/01\/joe-biden-is-doing-everything-possible-to-avoid-unleashing-american-energy-production\/\">ordered a release<\/a> of about 1 million oil barrels a day over the next six months while also looking for alternatives to import more Canadian crude after<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/06\/oops-biden-wants-to-import-more-canadian-oil-but-he-killed-the-keystone-pipeline\/\"> banning <\/a>the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/14\/bidens-decision-to-stop-the-keystone-pipeline-absolutely-hiked-gas-prices\/\">Keystone XL Pipeline<\/a> on his first day in office. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=33&#038;t=6#:~:text=In%202020%2C%20the%20United%20States,6.66%20billion%20barrels%20of%20petroleum.\">According<\/a> to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the United States consumes 20 million barrels of oil a day.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
