She then pointed to the Aug. 31 deadline for when the freeze on student loan debt payments and interest accrual is set to lapse, saying: \u201cWe have to then decide whether it\u2019s extended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody\u2019s had to pay a dollar, a cent, anything in student loans since Joe Biden has been president,\u201d Psaki said. \u201cAnd, if that can help people ease the burden of costs in other parts of their lives, that\u2019s an important thing to consider. That\u2019s a big part of the consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between now and the end of August, Psaki said the moratorium is \u201ceither going to be extended or we\u2019re going to make a decision, as Ron referenced, about canceling student debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The current pause on federal student loan payments was first implemented under the Trump administration at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. It has since been extended six times.<\/p>\n<p>Biden last extended the pause earlier this month\u00a0amid mounting pressure from advocates, borrowers and members of his own party to provide further relief.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Biden during his campaign called for federal student loan debt cancellation, and supported forgiveness of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joebiden\/status\/1241869418981920769?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least<\/a>\u00a0$10,000 per borrower. However, some top Democrats have pushed for him to go beyond that, canceling up to $50,000 per borrower, or wiping out federal student loan debt entirely.<\/p>\n<p>But unifying on a path forward has been tricky for Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House called on Congress to send legislation cancelling debt to Biden\u2019s desk, but Democrats are not optimistic about their chances of doing so in the 50-50 Senate given staunch GOP opposition. Sixty votes would be needed to overcome procedural hurdles.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, some moderate Democrats do not back canceling student loan debt,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/senate\/3267041-democrats-face-pressure-from-left-center-on-student-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\">citing concerns<\/a>\u00a0about rising inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some progressives insist Biden should unilaterally cancel student debt through executive action. However, some lawmakers say Biden does not have such authority,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/finance\/565297-pelosi-disputes-bidens-power-to-forgive-student-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a>\u00a0Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Psaki said in the interview that Biden\u2019s preference \u201cfrom the beginning\u201d has been legislation because \u201cbills are more permanent\u201d than executive action, which she argued could be undone in the future by another president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe courts and, God forbid, there\u2019s a Republican in the White House one day, I mean, they can overturn these things,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is the thing with executive actions, you can go back and forth and overturn them, and obviously, we want something in any of these cases where it\u2019s more permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roughly a year ago, the White House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/546065-biden-requesting-information-on-legal-authority-to-cancel-student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0it requested a memo from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to determine whether Biden had the power to cancel student loans across the board.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Klain touched on the matter in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/podsaveamerica\/status\/1499527767368601604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a video<\/a>\u00a0shared by Pod Save America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe question, whether or not there\u2019s some executive action student debt forgiveness, when the payments resume, is a decision we\u2019re going to take before the payments resume,\u201d Klain said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, people aren\u2019t having to pay on their loans, and so I think dealing with the executive branch question, what we should do about that, what his powers are, how much we should do on that, that\u2019s something we\u2019re gonna deal with later on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"thehill-promo-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/3269754-twitter-adopts-poison-bill-to-prevent-elon-musk-takeover\/\" class=\"thehill-promo-link__link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tTwitter adopts poison pill to prevent Elon Musk takeover\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/3269714-finland-highly-likely-to-join-nato-minister-says\/\" class=\"thehill-promo-link__link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tFinland \u2018highly likely\u2019 to join NATO, minister says\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has been advocating for $50,000 in student debt cancellation,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/senate\/3266646-schumer-white-house-closer-to-cancelling-student-debt-than-ever-before\/\" target=\"_blank\">signaled<\/a>\u00a0progress for his push in remarks to activists on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have talked personally to the president on this issue a whole bunch of times. I have told him that this is more important than just about anything else that he can do on his own,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making progress folks. We are making progress.
