NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/space\/us-officials-confirm-first-known-interstellar-meteor-struck-earth-2014-rcna24377\">reports<\/a> the rock has been dubbed\u00a0CNEOS 2014-01-08.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In 2019, Siraj, then an undergraduate student at Harvard University, and Astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb, Siraj\u2019s academic advisor, reported with 99.999 percent confidence that the meteor was interstellar. The duo <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1904.07224.pdf\">published<\/a> their findings in a June 6, 2019, report entitled:\u00a0<em>Discovery of a Meteor of Interstellar Origin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the Scientific American piece, Siraj noted that he and Loeb had difficulty getting their work published in a peer-review journal, as reviewers were apprehensive regarding the unknown essence of the error bars. The pair then sought the help of two scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Scientist Matt Heavner got in touch with an anonymous analyst, who procured satellite data regarding the meteor\u2019s velocity components, which in turn, enabled Siraj and Loeb to claim 99.999 percent certainty regarding the origins of the meteor, Siraj said. However, peer-reviewers again rejected a paper from the researchers as there was no official government statement, but only communications with the anonymous analyst, according to Siraj.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Though immensely confident in their findings, the realization was not confirmed until March or April, when Space Force Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. John Shaw verified the researchers\u2019 report, Siraj said in Tuesday\u2019s article.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Joel Mozer, the Chief Scientist of Space Operations Command, <span>reviewed analysis of additional data available to the Department of Defense related to this finding,\u201d Shaw <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/US_SpaceCom\/status\/1511856370756177921?s=20&#038;t=cScpekIPoFjMcLmKB-L_hw\">wrote<\/a> in the memorandum, which U.S. Space Command shared on Twitter on April 6.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cDr. Mozer confirmed that the velocity estimate reported to NASA is sufficiently accurate to indicate interstellar trajectory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">6\/ \u201cI had the pleasure of signing a memo with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ussfspoc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ussfspoc<\/a>\u2019s Chief Scientist, Dr. Mozer, to confirm that a previously-detected interstellar object was indeed an interstellar object, a confirmation that assisted the broader astronomical community.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PGlIOnCSrW\">pic.twitter.com\/PGlIOnCSrW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 U.S. Space Command (@US_SpaceCom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/US_SpaceCom\/status\/1511856370756177921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">I had the pleasure of signing a memo with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@ussfspoc<\/span><span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u2019s Chief Scientist, Dr. Mozer, to confirm that a previously-detected interstellar object was indeed an interstellar object, a confirmation that assisted the broader astronomical community,\u201d Shaw said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The telltale sign indicating the meteor originated in interstellar space was its speed, as anything traveling above 42 kilometers per second escapes the sun\u2019s gravitational pull, Siraj said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>Anything traveling over this local celestial speed limit, then, may come from (and if unimpeded should return to) interstellar space. The CNEOS entry for the 2014 Manus Island fireball indicated the meteor hit the Earth\u2019s atmosphere at about 45 kilometers per second\u2014very promising.\u00a0<\/span><span>However, some of this speed came from the object\u2019s motion relative to the Earth and the Earth\u2019s motion around the sun. Teasing apart these effects with the help of computer programs that I wrote, I found that the object had overtaken the Earth from behind before striking our atmosphere, and likely had a sun-relative speed closer to 60 kilometers per second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIf the data were correct, this event would be the first interstellar meteor ever discovered,\u201d he went on to add.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The discovery also makes\u00a0CNEOS 2014-01-08 the earliest known interstellar object to enter the earth\u2019s atmosphere \u2013 predating \u201c\u2018Oumuamua,\u00a0the object identified in October 2017 as the first known interstellar visitor to the solar system,\u201d Siraj noted in his article.
