The Waco-based pair became mega-popular thanks to their HGTV show \u201cFixer Upper.\u201d Episodes featured Chip tackling construction projects for clients and Joanna painting everything white and deepening a nation\u2019s\u00a0 appreciation for shiplap walls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Renovation reality shows were common enough, but the Gaines\u2019 show offered a somewhat different dream to viewers . Instead of capitalizing on the drama and mockery often showcased by other reality show hosts, this married pair demonstrated clear love for one another. The show followed their family as Chip and Joanna raised four children \u2014 with the couple eventually having a fifth child-on an idyllic, 40 acres of farmland in Texas, complete with cute baby goats and family game nights under the stars. People didn\u2019t just want to watch Chip and Joanna \u2014 they wanted to <\/span><i><span>be<\/span><\/i><span> Chip and Joanna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, anytime a couple with traditional values comes along and celebrates big family living or normalizes concepts like loving your spouse and going to church on Sundays, detractors appear to rip them apart. However, despite multiple attempts to cancel the Gaineses, the couple has actually gained popularity over time \u2014 in spite of their refusal to adapt to the mainstream narrative. They\u2019ve had to defend themselves on a few occasions, but Chip and Joanna have mostly thrived by staying silent and continuing to live in truth instead of appeasing the woke mob. So far, it\u2019s working.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critics first came after the Gaineses for attending a church that promoted traditional marriage between one man and one woman. BuzzFeed published an investigation into Antioch Community Church and its pastor, Jimmy Seibert, after he referred to the Gaineses as his \u201cgood friends\u201d in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/kateaurthur\/chip-and-joanna-gaines-church-same-sex-marriage\"><span>BuzzFeed<\/span><\/a><span>, Seibert preached against same-sex marriage during a sermon in 2015 following the monumental <\/span><i><span>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/span><\/i><span> decision, which requires states to license marriages between two people of the same sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a clear biblical admonition. So if someone were to say, \u2018Marriage is defined in a different way,\u2019 let me just say: They are wrong,\u201d Seibert said in his sermon, per BuzzFeed. \u201cGod defined marriage, not you and I. God defined masculine and feminine, male and female, not you and I.\u201d He went on to say that \u201chomosexuality is a sin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The publication also noted that the HGTV show \u201cFixer Upper\u201d had never featured any same-sex couples over the years, and as of this publication, they still haven\u2019t. HGTV network reps were quick to clarify their stance on the issue, saying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/kateaurthur\/lgbt-couples-welcome-on-fixer-upper-hgtv-says#.xeEqB8VKW\"><span>in a statement<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cWe don\u2019t discriminate against members of the LGBT community in any of our shows. HGTV is proud to have a crystal clear, consistent record of including people from all walks of life in its series.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This backlash prompted Chip and Joanna to make a rare, direct address to the public, which strived to defend and clarify their positions. Fans noticed that while their carefully worded statement avoided condemning gay people it did not condone gay marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/life\/entertainment\/news\/a47563\/chip-joanna-gaines-controversies\/\"><span>Good Housekeeping<\/span><\/a><span>, Chip shared a statement on the couple\u2019s website, Magnolia, which stated: \u201cJoanna and I have personal convictions.\u201d He continued: \u201cOne of them is this: we care about you for the simple fact that you are a person, our neighbor on planet earth. It\u2019s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality or faith.\u201d The post has since been removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joanna also addressed the situation while speaking with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/chip-joanna-gaines-fixer-upper-magnolia-network-1234975027\/\"><span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span> in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe accusations that get thrown at you, like you\u2019re a racist or you don\u2019t like people in the LGBTQ community, that\u2019s the stuff that really eats my lunch \u2014 because it\u2019s so far from who we really are,\u201d the 43-year-old, biracial mom of five said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There was even more drama beyond the ire of the LGBT camp. In 2021, the Gaineses allegedly donated $1,000 to Chip\u2019s sister, Shannon Braun, who was running for the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD School Board in Texas. The problem for some followers was that Braun was running on a campaign of eliminating critical race theory from schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/enrichment\/education\/555421-tv-stars-chip-and-joanna-gaines-donate-to-campaign\/\">The Hil<\/a><\/span><span>l<\/span><span>, Braun\u2019s platform called CRT \u201cthe single most divisive threat\u201d in education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI will vote down anything and everything that further promotes critical race theory in our school district and actively work to remove all critical race theory,\u201d she said in a video shared to her campaign Facebook page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A lesser controversy occurred after Joanna found herself unexpectedly pregnant at 40. Her kids were all a little older, and she and Chip thought they were well past the baby stage. However, Joanna described the experience with joy and acceptance rather than with fear and regret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was a total surprise. But when we found out, it solidified that it was the right decision to leave [\u2018Fixer Upper\u2019] when we did,\u201d she said in 2018 upon hearing the news, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/joanna-gaines-reveals-her-reaction-learning-she-was-pregnant-baby-t128190\"><span>Today<\/span><\/a><span>. The couple had already decided to step away from their hit show on HGTV to focus on their family and their thriving lifestyle brand, including a retail emporium in Waco. They would later relaunch \u201cFixer Upper\u201d on their own cable network, Magnolia Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI had been feeling a little emotional and crazy and thought, \u2018Wow, this isn\u2019t me,\u2019\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryliving.com\/life\/entertainment\/a20121869\/joanna-gaines-pregnancy-story\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Country Living magazine. \u201cThen all of a sudden I realized, \u2018Hey, I remember this.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen I saw the results of the test, my jaw dropped,\u201d she continued. \u201cChip was in the driveway about to leave when I called him back and said, \u2018We\u2019re pregnant!\u2019 He was so excited. We\u2019re both just so excited.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She went on to discuss how she\u2019s open to God\u2019s plan, even if she didn\u2019t say that in so many words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI joke with my friends that I\u2019m going to be that 45-year-old who\u2019s pregnant,\u201d she said. \u201cChip is such a kid at heart and we both love a big family. I\u2019m open to whatever. I\u2019m just having fun with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now their newest addition, Crew Gaines, is an adorable preschooler who has become a treasured addition to the family. She discussed how having young kids in her 40s has kept her feeling young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI feel younger than ever because I now see the world like Crew sees it,\u201d she told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/parents\/joanna-gaines-video-crew-saying-goodnight-to-plants\/\"><span>People<\/span><\/a><span> in 2020. \u201cI\u2019m very thankful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When your kids get older, you start adjusting the way you parent,\u201d Joanna continued. \u201cBut when you have a toddler, it\u2019s so different. You almost have to see the world in the way that they do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen Crew is in the car with me, it\u2019s always, \u2018I see a sun, I see a tractor, I see a boat.\u2019 He\u2019s finding the simplest things, and in his mind it\u2019s an amazing discovery, but to us it\u2019s just stuff. When you look at things through the eyes of your children, it brings you back to that place of awe and wonder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Not everyone was on board with the Gaineses having five children. One CBC News reporter, Kristen Pyszczyk, suggested \u201cshaming\u201d celebrities for promoting large families and thus contributing to overpopulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile having a child or five is a very personal choice, it\u2019s also a choice that affects everyone who inhabits our planet,\u201d the journalist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/opinion\/chip-joanna-gains-pregnancy-1.4481165\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> in the op-ed. \u201cSo while many people might find the backlash unwarranted, it\u2019s actually a conversation we need to have in order to challenge our uncritical acceptance of the life-fulfillment-through-procreation story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cShame is a powerful tool for changing behaviour: it\u2019s how we introduce new and existing social conditions,\u201d Pyszczyk continued. While she says Chip and Joanna are not the only ones who deserve scolding, she cited their pregnancy announcement as indicative of a larger problem. \u201cSo when people do irresponsible things like having five children, we absolutely need to be calling them out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chip and Joanna Gaines have been able to take a small business and turn it into a cultural phenomenon just by being themselves. Their success is evident, despite the drama that has followed their journey and those who have tried to tear them down. Without an overtly political agenda, the pair has managed to promote traditional values, big families, and simple living. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Left will probably keep trying to cancel them.
