The bill would also require paying double the regular wage for those working more than 12 hours in a day or for seven days per week \u2014 thereby hiking hourly wages by approximately 25%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rensi told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/labor-costs-former-mcdonalds-usa-ceo\"><span>Fox Business<\/span><\/a><span> anchor Neil Cavuto that \u201cCalifornia has always been on the leading edge of smart things and dumb things.\u201d The executive added that the four-day workweek proposal will result in \u201cunintended consequences\u201d and emphasized that the government \u201cdoesn\u2019t understand\u201d the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also expressed his concern that the California policy would significantly worsen labor shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe got 12 million unfilled jobs in the United States right now that we can\u2019t recruit for. Restaurants are desperately trying to hire people and can\u2019t find them anywhere\u2026 You put this kind of [law] in place, you\u2019re really paying a lot of people overtime,\u201d Rensi explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that the shortened workweek proposal may diminish workers\u2019 well-being, allowing people \u201cto get two jobs, because they can work three days in one place\u2026 three days in another place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve got mixed feelings about it,\u201d Rensi continued. \u201cI want our workers to have a good quality of life, have enough money to support themselves and their families\u2026 put their kids through college.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>California Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia \u2014 who co-sponsored the four-day workweek bill \u2014 said employees do not want a return to normalcy following COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced recession. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen over 47 million people voluntarily leave their jobs for better opportunities. We\u2019re seeing a labor shortage across the board from small to big businesses,\u201d Garcia told Fortune. \u201cAnd so it\u2019s very clear that employees don\u2019t want to go back to normal or the old way, but to rethink and go back to [something] better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The California Chamber of Commerce argued that the bill \u201csignificantly increases labor costs by imposing an overtime pay requirement after 32 hours and other requirements that are impossible to comply with.\u201d Chamber President and CEO Jennifer Barrera argued that the legislation would kill job creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCalifornia companies are the economic engine that drives innovation and job creation in our state and are responsible for the record revenues the state is currently experiencing,\u201d Barrera explained in the press release. \u201cYet, the bills on this year\u2019s job killer list reflect a lack of appreciation of the economic realities and regulatory challenges employers\u2026 A shrinking workforce coupled with California\u2019s oppressive legal climate, penchant for overregulation, and continued push for even higher taxes, will hamper the ability of California companies to remain competitive in the future.
