And now, two women in the prison are pregnant, officials have confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The women were not identified, and it is not clear if they were impregnated by one or more of the 27 \u201ctransgender women\u201d who are housed in the state\u2019s only all-women\u2019s prison.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women officials did say, however, that the sex between prisoners was consensual.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ACLU sues New Jersey to get prison inmates housed by their \u201cgender identity.\u201d Now two female prisoners are pregnant.  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dqpyRngx7F\">https:\/\/t.co\/dqpyRngx7F<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Richard Hanania (@RichardHanania) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardHanania\/status\/1514399834697961472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10716417\/Two-women-female-New-Jersey-prison-PREGNANT-trans-inmates.html\">picked up<\/a> on the story first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/2022\/04\/two-women-at-nj-prison-are-pregnant-after-consensual-sex-between-inmates-doc-says.html\">reported<\/a> by NJ.com:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>ACLU legal director Jeanne LoCicero defended on Tuesday the policy, saying it ensured the rights of trans prisoners were not violated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] in line with New Jersey\u2019s strong anti-discrimination laws that prevent discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity,\u201d LoCicero said in the article.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Mail<\/em> report continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In 2021, two Edna Mahan prisoners filed a lawsuit seeking for the gender identity policy to be revoked, after they were allegedly harassed by transgender prisoners.\u00a0The women also claimed the transgender inmates were engaging in sexual activity with cisgender prisoners. Critics of the settlement with the ACLU argue that the measure is yet another burden for a state prison that has seen alarming reports of abuse and rape by guards throughout the last decade.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The correctional officers\u2019 union at the prison opposes the policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe opposed this policy change believing it would be detrimental to the general population of female inmates being housed at Edna Mahan and also bring added stress to our correctional police officers assigned to this institution,\u201d the union\u2019s president told NJ.com.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Mail<\/em> reported that in recent years, Edna Mahan has faced reports of abuse and dysfunction at the institution.
