Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Thursday that will prohibit all abortions in the state after 15 weeks of gestation, adding Florida to a growing list of Republican-led states that have taken action to defend the lives of the unborn over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouse Bill 5 protects babies in the womb who have beating hearts, who can move, who can taste, who can see, and who can feel pain,\u201d\u00a0DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2022\/04\/14\/governor-ron-desantis-signs-bill-to-protect-the-lives-of-floridas-most-vulnerable\/\">said<\/a> during a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1514615105774059520?s=20&#038;t=_WZZkf8FcJQD5kqTuLtH0g\">morning signing ceremony<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cLife is a sacred gift worthy of our protection, and I am proud to sign this great piece of legislation which represents the most significant protections for life in the state\u2019s modern history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u201cReducing Fetal and Infant Mortality Act,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/5\">bill<\/a> passed the state Senate last month after its previous passage in the state House in February. Set to take effect July 1, the law does allow for a few <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/14\/florida-gov-desantis-signs-15-week-abortion-ban-into-law\/\">exceptions<\/a> for abortion procedures, including instances when it is necessary to \u201csave the mother\u2019s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that all these kids deserve an opportunity,\u201d\u00a0DeSantis added. \u201cWe\u2019re not just giving lip service to that, we\u2019re actually signing legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Florida, Oklahoma passed a law barring abortions in all cases but medical emergencies <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/13\/oklahoma-prepares-for-the-end-of-roe-with-new-abortion-ban\/\">earlier this week<\/a>, with Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt saying that he wants \u201cOklahoma to be the most pro-life state in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised Oklahomans that I would sign every pro-life bill that hit my desks, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing here today,\u201d he said during a Tuesday press event. \u201cWe want to outlaw abortion in the state of Oklahoma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pro-life actions taken by Republican-led states come as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to decide on a major abortion-related case this summer. As noted by Federalist western correspondent Tristan Justice, \u201ca decision in the case of <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization <\/em>contesting a Mississippi abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy is expected in June, with the potential to reverse the court\u2019s landmark 1973 decision in <em>Roe<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional states that have passed abortion bans similar to those of Florida, Mississippi, and Oklahoma include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texas-abortion-ban-back-in-effect-after-suspension\">Texas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/30\/arizona-gov-signs-bills-blocking-trans-athletes-abortions\/\">Arizona<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/kentucky-legislature-overrides-governors-veto-passes-abortion-restrictions-11649896715\">Kentucky<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Shawn Fleetwood is an intern at The Federalist and a senior at the University of Mary Washington.
