The figure compared with the 61.8-percent expansion in the January-February period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But some industry insiders estimated that the world\u2019s largest rare-earth exporter could see export drops in coming months, as China\u2019s rare-earth production capacity faces obstacles. Major border gates between China and Myanmar\u2014 which accounts for about half of China\u2019s rare-earth mineral supply \u2013 have been shut down again since the beginning of the year, posing serious challenges for the transfer of raw material supply and further price fluctuations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Interestingly, the <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>saw nothing to fear from other countries, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2019\/08\/27\/u-s-seeks-partnership-australia-break-chinas-hold-rare-earth-mining\/\"><span>United States<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/24\/australia-challenges-chinas-stranglehold-rare-earths-critical-green-energy\/\"><span>Australia<\/span><\/a><span>, ramping up their own rare-earth mining operations to lessen China\u2019s dominance of the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>China is moving aggressively to consolidate its control of the market for these minerals, which are vitally needed for a variety of electronics and manufacturing applications but are especially crucial for \u201cgreen\u201d technologies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>In December 2021, Beijing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/23\/china-create-rare-earths-behemoth-company-stabilize-supply-chain\/\"><span>blessed<\/span><\/a><span> a merger of three huge state-owned mining enterprises to create the behemoth China Rare Earth Group, a single entity that controls 30 percent of China\u2019s production \u2013 and China accounts for 80 percent of the global supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Chinese officials claimed this merger was merely a helpful step to ensure the stability of global supply chains, international analysts saw the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpri.org\/article\/2022\/03\/chinas-rare-earth-metals-consolidation-and-market-power\/\"><span>birth of a cartel<\/span><\/a><span> similar to OPEC, giving China the ability to manipulate prices the way OPEC influences the global price of oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chinese Communist Party is not at all shy about using such market power for political purposes. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3130990\/chinas-dominance-rare-earths-supply-growing-concern-west\"><span>noted<\/span><\/a><span> last April that China controls \u201cmost of the world\u2019s capacity for key components used in lithium-ion battery manufacturing and 80 percent of global battery cell manufacturing capacity,\u201d leverage that will prove increasingly powerful as Western nations push their economies to become more dependent upon such products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The European Union (EU) warned around the same time that China dominates the market for at least 30 raw materials deemed crucial to European industry, making those supply chains \u201cextremely vulnerable.\u201d China\u2019s own demand for rare earths is rapidly increasing, raising the possibility that Beijing will simply prioritize its own needs above other nations and dominate every industry that depends on these minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) in January <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/exclusive-us-bill-would-block-defense-contractors-using-chinese-rare-earths-2022-01-14\/\"><span>introduced<\/span><\/a><span> a bill that would ban American defense contractors from buying rare earths from China by 2026 and establish a permanent national stockpile of the minerals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The U.S. presently only has one rare earths mine and no domestic processing capability, but Cotton noted America was the world\u2019s leading supplier in the 1980s and allowing China to take such a dominant position was \u201csimply a policy choice the United States made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kelly said the bill would \u201cstrengthen America\u2019s position as a global leader in technology by reducing our country\u2019s reliance on adversaries like China for rare earth elements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2022\/02\/08\/world\/china-rare-earth-dependence\/\"><i><span>Japan Times<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>posited in February that China\u2019s creation of the mammoth China Rare Earth Group spurred U.S. lawmakers to take more vigorous action against Beijing\u2019s dominance of the industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Japan itself needs no further wake-up calls, as the Chinese blocked their supply of rare earths for several weeks in 2010 during a political dispute over the Senkaku Islands, then imposed export restrictions that dramatically increased the price of the minerals for several years thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s state-run Global Times on Wednesday highlighted soaring rare-earth exports as a bright spot in the sputtering Chinese economy, suggesting the international obsession with \u201cgreen energy\u201d could be the Communist<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":41,"featured_media":2315279,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mo_disable_npp":"","fifu_image_url":"","fifu_image_alt":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1438492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1438492","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/41"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1438492"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1438492\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2315279"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1438492"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1438492"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1438492"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
