Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday single-handedly wiped out the Democrats\u2019 national gerrymandering advantage by proposing a map that eliminates constitutional infirmities.<\/p>\n<p>Subject to the legislature\u2019s approval and likely court challenges, the map will destroy all the hard work Democrats\u2019\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/05\/republicans-defeated-eric-holders-nationwide-gerrymandering-plot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">redistricting machine<\/a>\u00a0has created throughout the last months.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The DeSantis-proposed map will yield 20 red districts and 8 blue ones.<\/p>\n<p>Last month Republican establishment House Speaker Chris Sprowls (R) and Senate President Wilton Simpson (R) bucked DeSantis\u2019s original map that would have generated 20 red and 8 blue districts. Instead, the lawmakers passed and submitted a subpar map to DeSantis, which created only\u00a018 red and 10 blue districts. Previous maps designed by\u00a0Sprowls and\u00a0Simpson were even worse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20620505\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p>In turn, DeSantis vetoed the Democrat-aligned map and announced a special session in April to consider the establishment\u2019s map. With the special session occurring next week, the establishment Republicans told DeSantis to submit a map for the legislature to once again consider.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20620613\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">DeSantis\u2019s newest map is similar to his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonySabatini\/status\/1482914214574538754?s=20&#038;t=w1R74-kvdUDd-FLTzMNDEg\">original<\/a> one. The latest version would\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1514340729644109831?s=20&#038;t=1cmQJf4Khl9l2D1Btt-yjA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">eliminate<\/a>\u00a0a Democrat district near Jacksonville by splitting it in two. It would also create a more favorable district near Tampa Bay and\u00a0Pinellas County, an area that is turning red, districts that Sprowls and Simpson apparently opposed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a letter to the lawmakers, DeSantis\u2019s\u00a0general counsel, Ryan Newman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2022\/04\/13\/desantis-releases-new-congressional-redistricting-map-with-key-senate-backing\/\">said<\/a> the proposed map \u201cis the product of collaboration and consultation with the House and Senate leadership and draws from the maps that were recently passed by the Legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>With\u00a0Sprowls and Simpson falling in line, the map is likely to be approved by the legislature, thus reshaping Florida\u2019s political future for the next ten years.\u00a0Redistricting expert and\u00a0senior editor of the Cook Political Report David Wasserman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marceelias\/status\/1514352891640877057?s=20&#038;t=WigNHJ8K80Nh7I0HhWYgZg\">tweeted<\/a> the map would totally destroy the Democrats\u2019 nationwide gerrymandering actions since the 2020 census.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n\">\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-1s2bzr4\">\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cIf this 20R-8D FL map passes and withstands court challenges, it could net Republicans four additional seats, entirely wiping out Dems\u2019 national redistricting gains thus far,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Wasserman said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If this 20R-8D FL map passes and withstands court challenges, it could net Republicans four additional seats, entirely wiping out Dems&#8217; national redistricting gains thus far. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7MU6BaPrDM\">https:\/\/t.co\/7MU6BaPrDM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1514340729644109831?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not everyone is impressed with the map. Leading Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias, who played a key role in pushing for vote-by-mail across the nation during the 2020 election and is supporting Democrats\u2019 efforts to gerrymander congressional district maps, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marceelias\/status\/1514352891640877057?s=20&#038;t=WigNHJ8K80Nh7I0HhWYgZg\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0the map will face legal challenges, presumably because it deconstructs Democrat-designed districts shaped by race.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have been very successful in the courts.\u00a0Former President Barack Obama\u2019s one-time attorney general, Eric Holder, has successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/05\/republicans-defeated-eric-holders-nationwide-gerrymandering-plot\/\">thwarted<\/a> Republican state lawmakers\u2019 redistricting methods by aggressively\u00a0gerrymandering House districts via the court system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-article-headline\">Holder\u2019s success is a result of his \u201csue to blue\u201d strategy, which he\u00a0implemented\u00a0after Obama was destroyed in the 2010 redistricting cycle, the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0reported. Developing the plan under the\u00a0National Democratic Redistricting Committee he created, Holder was influential in causing Republican legislatures to be less aggressive.\u00a0Sprowls and Simpson have likely felt the heat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If this map is enacted, Florida will be sued. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BZdDWK8sZs\">https:\/\/t.co\/BZdDWK8sZs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Marc E. General counsel Newman defended the map by arguing race should not take legal precedent over the 14th Amendment provisions of equal protection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBecause of these adjustments, the new proposed apportionment plan eliminates the federal constitutional infirmities identified by the governor and improves on several metrics relative to the maps passed by the Legislature,\u201d Newman wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Earlier this week, DeSantis also defended his map by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2022\/04\/12\/desantis-says-he-wants-race-neutral-map-of-congressional-districts\/\">citing<\/a>\u00a0<em>Cooper v. Harris<\/em>. The 2017 case was decided by a 5-3 majority in the Supreme Court, which held the\u00a0North Carolina General Assembly engaged in \u201cunconstitutional racial gerrymanders\u201d by leaning on race too heavily when it drew two districts after the 2010 census.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">DeSantis\u2019s map has wide support among conservative Florida Republicans. Former state senator and current Lake County property appraiser Carey Baker\u00a0told\u00a0Breitbart News that DeSantis\u2019s map is \u201cabsolutely\u201d the \u201ccleanest and least gerrymandered map that possibly has ever been proposed for the state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe know it will be challenged in court by the left, but any fair-minded court should easily come to the conclusion that this map complies with all state and federal redistricting requirements,\u201d Baker told Breitbart News. \u201cGovernor DeSantis is blessed with a state Supreme Court that isn\u2019t an activist court so if this map is considered solely on its merits it should sail through any challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rory Diamond, conservative Jacksonville City Council member, told Breitbart News the map is an act of \u201cpolitical courage\u201d from DeSantis.\u00a0Diamond\u2019s city of\u00a0Jacksonville will be favorably impacted by the proposed map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor DeSantis\u2019 map is constitutional and an act of political courage, fighting a half-century of gerrymandering,\u201d he told Breitbart News. \u201cNow we need real conservatives to fill these new seats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state legislature is poised to pass DeSantis\u2019s second map into law next week during its special session.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Follow Wendell Huseb\u00f8 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WendellHusebo?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gettr.com\/user\/wendellhusebo\">Gettr<\/a>\u00a0@WendellHuseb\u00f8<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
