Ron DeSantis signed legislation Thursday banning late-term abortions after 15 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>The law, HB 5, allows exceptions when the mother\u2019s life is at risk or in danger of \u201cirreversible physical impairment,\u201d or if the unborn baby has a fetal abnormality, such as Down Syndrome. It does not offer exceptions for rape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are protections for babies that have heartbeats, that can feel pain,\u201d DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/vwg34n-gov.-desantis-will-sign-pro-life-bill-in-short-order.html\">said of HB 5 in March,<\/a> when he signaled he would sign the legislation. \u201cAnd this [15 weeks] is very, very late. And so I think the protections are warranted. Chip Roy to question whether \u201cMayor Bowser and her radically pro-abortion cronies\u201d are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dc-authorities-fail-to-address-calls-for-autopsies-of-preemie-sized-babies\">avoiding autopsies<\/a> for ideological reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s legislation has received strong pushback from President Joe Biden\u2019s administration and from abortion supporters and groups like the Center for Reproductive Rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this ban is allowed to take effect, Floridians will be forced to travel more than <a href=\"https:\/\/states.guttmacher.org\/#florida\">1,000 miles roundtrip<\/a> to get an abortion after 15 weeks,\u201d Elisabeth Smith, Director of State Policy &#038; Advocacy at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement in late March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stakes in the Supreme Court right now could not be higher,\u201d she added. \u201cAmericans of reproductive age today have never known a world in which they do not have the right to abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 press secretary tore into Biden after the president criticized the state\u2019s upcoming pro-life legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night, the Republican-controlled Florida legislature passed a dangerous bill that will severely restrict women\u2019s access to reproductive health care,\u201d Biden said in a late-March tweet. \u201cMy Administration will not stand for the continued erosion of women\u2019s constitutional rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw responded to the president by asking why he did not specify that the bill protects unborn babies after 15 weeks, highlighting that the Biden administration has repeatedly refused to address where it draws the line on abortion. This has caused many to infer that it has no objections to abortions at any stage of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is when they can already feel pain and they\u2019re getting close to viability,\u201d she said. \u201cBabies have been born at 20 weeks and survived.
