The CDC said it was doing so to examine the new most prevalent variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, known as BA.2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to assess the potential impact the rise of cases has on severe disease, including hospitalizations and deaths, and health care system capacity, the CDC order will remain in place at this time,\u201d the agency said in a statement extending the mandate until May 3.<\/p>\n<p>The extension didn\u2019t go over well on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirline mask mandate extensions are nothing more than the last punitive gasps of a dying tyrannical movement,\u201d conservative commentator John Cardillo <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johncardillo\/status\/1514283050028441600\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Never let a good crisis go to waste,&#8217;\u201d Newsweek Opinion Editor Josh Hammer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative radio host Buck Sexton dubbed the extension \u201clunacy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BuckSexton\/status\/1514260015531577345\">adding<\/a>, \u201cThe share of Covid that is spread on planes is statistically 0. This is all about political appearances and control. Libs are so pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CDC is the best example yet that nothing is too oppressive, stupid, or pointless for bureaucrats to ram down your throat,\u201d Sexton also wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The CDC is the best example yet that nothing is too oppressive, stupid, or pointless for bureaucrats to ram down your throat <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qmaj5svgKL\">https:\/\/t.co\/qmaj5svgKL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Buck Sexton (@BuckSexton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BuckSexton\/status\/1514302204244549640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Experts also weighed in on the CDC extension. \u201cI think it extends the inconsistencies,\u201d Dr. Marc Siegel said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/cdc-mask-mandate-travel-covid-dr-siegel\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCDC just recently a couple weeks ago said OK, now we\u2019re going to focus on severity, on hospitalizations, on deaths, not so much on case numbers. Meanwhile, everything has gone down, including case numbers. Hospitalizations are at all-time low from the beginning of the pandemic. Deaths have gone down below 650 for the first time in a really long time. And case numbers are under 30,000 a day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve been on a plane lately, half the people are not wearing [masks] properly or taking them off for hours to eat. There\u2019s no sense that you are making a safer environment there. The surgeon general told me today in an interview I just did he thinks the reason it\u2019s staying in place is for people that have to go to work and have no other way to go there, and he wants a safe environment. CDC wants a safe environment. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s even working,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The extension came as a new poll found fewer than one in 10 Americans think the COVID-19 pandemic is still a \u201cserious crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While 16% of Democrats think COVID-19 is still serious, just 3% of Republicans do, the <a class href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/axios-ipsos-poll-most-americans-say-covid-is-no-longer-a-crisis-6604f7d2-a476-48eb-8e2d-9cb94c425159.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Axios<\/a> poll found.<\/p>\n<p>Americans do think the virus continues to be a problem, but think it\u2019s manageable. More than seven in 10 (73%) say so, with 17% saying COVID-19 is \u201cnot a problem at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s another way to look at the overall numbers,\u201d Axios wrote. \u201cAbout twice as large a share of Americans said COVID-19 is \u2018not a problem at all\u2019 (17%) than said it is \u2018a serious crisis\u2019 (9%).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest wave of our national survey actually found a slight uptick in people\u2019s perceptions of the risks of certain activities, including flying, attending sports events and returning to work. Yet it shows the highest share of Americans visiting friends and family members outside the home \u2014 and the lowest rate of social distancing \u2014 since the early part of last summer,\u201d the website added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans are ready for coronavirus regulations to ease up \u2013 if they haven\u2019t already,\u201d the pollsters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/news-polls\/axios-ipsos-coronavirus-index\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent, and ran the Drudge Report from 2010 to 2015.
