Florida is the most well-known example of a state crafting and passing legislation expressly for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for making an example out of New Jersey is because earlier this year, one school district promoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/sh\/dge2a30qi05brxw\/AADZE5YRB-DViEZ-eiLQ1yoYa\/By%20the%20end%20of%20Grade%202?dl=0&#038;preview=3Rs-NJ_PinkBluePurple.pdf&#038;subfolder_nav_tracking=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">materials<\/a> offering first-grade teachers lessons on \u201chonest sexuality education\u201d that would \u201cDefine gender, gender identity and gender role stereotypes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Included in that sweet-sounding literature was instruction for teachers in discussing the young students\u2019 body parts. \u201cYou might feel like you are a boy, you might feel like you are a girl,\u201d it says. \u201cYou might feel like you\u2019re a boy even if you have body parts that some people might tell you are \u2018girl\u2019 parts. You might feel like you\u2019re a girl even if you have body parts that some people might tell you are \u2018boy\u2019 parts. And you might not feel like you\u2019re a boy or a girl, but you\u2019re a little bit of both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is, again, material made available by the school district to teachers of first-grade children.<\/p>\n<p>But not so fast! Blake was ready to demonstrate why this is all nothing. \u201cRepeatedly, Fox News and others have framed this as something amounting to actual school curriculum,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut the school district and the advocacy group both say that\u2019s not the case \u2014 that these were sample materials that the district shared as it reviews the state guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t you see? This isn\u2019t \u201cactual school curriculum.\u201d It\u2019s only \u201csample materials\u201d that were \u201cshared\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Blake helpfully included a quote from district Superintendent Raymond Gonz\u00e1lez, who offered this simple explanation: \u201cThe cited sample plans were part of a website that was included as a link to illustrate the type of possible resources for school districts shared by the N.J. Department of Education. We have said repeatedly that these are resources only and that they are not state-mandated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It makes all the difference, doesn\u2019t it? The guidance on talking with first graders about how their \u201c\u2018boy\u2019 parts\u201d and \u201c\u2018girl\u2019 parts\u201d make them feel isn\u2019t \u201cstate-mandated.\u201d They\u2019re just \u201cpossible resources for school districts\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Furthemore, up until just days ago, New Jersey\u2019s Department of Education had <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220320124355\/https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/education\/standards\/chp\/Docs\/2020NJSLS-CHPE_GradeBand_K-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official guidelines<\/a> on its website for how to talk with public-school children about gender identity and sexual orientation. Second-grade teachers are instructed to \u201cdiscuss the range of ways people express their gender and how gender role stereotypes may limit behavior.\u201d (The guidelines have since been taken down.)<\/p>\n<p>Editor: <em>Um, Aaron, it actually looks like this school district was instructing teachers to talk with young children about sex topics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Blake: <em>Yeah, but conservatives are overselling it. I asked, and it\u2019s not the actual school curriculum. It\u2019s not state-mandated. Hit publish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t even hair splitting.
