When it came to THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN ON THE SUPREME COURT, it was all about her race. But after a guy shot up a New York City subway car this week, the last thing the media wanted to tell us was his race.<\/p>\n<p>For more than three hours after the attack, we got urgent alerts:\u00a0<em>Suspect at large! Police request public\u2019s help! Be on the alert for a male, about 5\u20198<\/em><em>\u2033<\/em><em>, 160 lbs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In this particular case, the media\u2019s rule of never telling us the suspect\u2019s race (unless he\u2019s white) was more deranged than usual. This wasn\u2019t a carjacking. It wasn\u2019t a shooting at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/07\/13\/video-shows-ohio-mass-shooting-that-killed-teen-wounded-11\/\">block party<\/a>. It wasn\u2019t an attack on an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/14\/nyregion\/yonkers-hate-crime-anti-asian-attack.html\">Asian<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/new-york-mayor-decries-vicious-hatred-against-jews-as-antisemitic-attacks-continue\/\">Jew<\/a>. This crime had all the earmarks of a terror attack \u2014 smoke bombs, fireworks, a gas mask, and about a dozen people shot while trapped in a subway car.<\/p>\n<p>The police desperately needed the public\u2019s help, but most people were looking for a Middle Easterner.<\/p>\n<p>At least we knew it wasn\u2019t a white guy! If it had been, reporters would have worn out the \u201cW\u201d on their computer keyboards. There would have been rampant speculation that it was a Proud Boy, as top administration officials reminded us that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/06\/02\/remarks-by-president-biden-commemorating-the-100th-anniversary-of-the-tulsa-race-massacre\/\">white supremacy is the most lethal threat<\/a>\u00a0to the homeland today. (AP Photo\/Kevin Hagen)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>We\u2019re always told \u201cwokeness\u201d is just about being polite and that those who ridicule it are trying to \u201cdiscredit the claims of traditionally marginalized groups for respect.\u201d (Thomas Zimmer, history professor, Georgetown University) Or they are engaging in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-attacking-cancel-culture-and-woke-people-is-becoming-the-gops-new-political-strategy\/\">white backlash<\/a>.\u201d (Seth Cotlar, history professor, Willamette University)<\/p>\n[SIDEBAR: Don\u2019t go to college, kids!]\n<p>No, wokeness is real. And it can get us killed \u2014 when, for example, off the top of my head, a murderous psychopath is on the run and the media refuse to tell us what he looks like.<\/p>\n<p>At the New York Police Department\u2019s first press conference on the subway attack, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell came up with an all-new circumlocution to convey the relevant information without saying \u201cblack male.\u201d She said: \u201c\u2026 we will describe him as an individual, he is being reported as a male black.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA male black\u201d! That\u2019s so much better than \u201cblack male\u201d when identifying a criminal.<\/p>\n<p>By the time of the evening press conference, Sewell had settled on an even dumber description, calling him a \u201ca dark-skinned male.\u201d Great, so now we\u2019re back to looking for a Middle Easterner. Or possibly Hispanic. Maybe South Asian or mixed race. (Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The NYPD must have spent all day crafting that new euphemism, because \u201cdark-skinned male\u201d was the exact phrase used minutes later by the chief of detectives, James Essig. \u201cBlack\u201d is OUT. \u201cDark-skinned\u201d is IN.<\/p>\n<p><em>Biden Appoints First Dark-Skinned Woman (whatever the hell that is) to Supreme Court!<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>No, \u201cblack\u201d is fine,\u00a0<em>provided<\/em>\u00a0we\u2019re talking about THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, or THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE POLICE COMMISSIONER. Such as \u2026 Commissioner Sewell herself!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u201cOne of Mr. Adams\u2019 first appointments was to name Keechant Sewell, chief of detectives in Nassau County, as the first Black woman to head the NYPD.\u201d (The <em>Christian Science Monitor<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u201cNew York\u2019s incoming mayor just made history by appointing a Black woman to run the nation\u2019s largest police department \u2026\u201d (<em>New York Daily News<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u201cThis is truly historic. We heard that word a lot, but it\u2019s 176 years of the NYPD. You\u2019re the first woman, the first black woman to lead the force.\u201d (CNN\u2019s Jim Sciutto to Sewell)<\/p>\n<p>A black person becoming a Supreme Court justice or police commissioner makes black people feel good about themselves! But a black man being identified as the perpetrator of a heinous crime makes black people feel bad about themselves. And if New York City is not running like a top, then I don\u2019t know what your definition of \u201crunning like a top\u201d is.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of subway cameras capturing clear photos of the homicidal brute and being broadcast out within minutes of the attack, hours later, the police were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/nyc-brooklyn-subway-shooting-1.6416825\">climbing up ladders<\/a>\u00a0to physically inspect the cameras. They weren\u2019t working.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates the cameras, but they\u2019ve been VERY busy promoting diversity. Evidently, \u201cIs our equipment working?\u201d has not come up.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the MTA\u2019s summary of the last meeting:<\/p>\n<p>3rd Quarter 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/new.mta.info\/document\/52706\">Report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Diversity and Civil Rights will present 3rd quarter 2021 update on MTA Agency-wide EEO and M\/W\/DBE and SDVOB contract compliance activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatus Report on MTA Inter-Agency M\/W\/DBE and SDVOB Task Force. The Department of Diversity and Civil Rights report will address progress made by the Task Force to improve M\/W\/DBE and SDVOB participation. Master Page # 6 of 108 \u2014 Diversity Committee Meeting 9\/15\/2021<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2022 Diversity Committee Work Plan. The Department of Diversity and Civil Rights will present an updated Diversity Committee Work Plan for 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another confidence-inspiring development: The <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/04\/12\/nyregion\/brooklyn-subway-shooting#a-times-editor-was-at-the-scene-where-several-people-were-shot\">reports<\/a> that immediately after the shooting, \u201cToward the front of the train, three victims were being attended to by bystanders. A uniformed police officer approached, asking passengers to call 911 because\u00a0<em>his radio was not working<\/em>.\u201d (Emphasis added.)<\/p>\n<p>The officer\u2019s radio didn\u2019t work. But on the plus side, he\u2019s been through six diversity training sessions.<\/p>\n<p>To top things off, at the evening press conference, the top brass COULDN\u2019T GET ZOOM TO WORK. Mayor Eric Adams was introduced, whereupon every TV in the land broadcast total silence for a solid 60 seconds, while city officials stood around waiting for the mayor to appear. They finally gave up and patched him in later.<\/p>\n<p>At least the mayor is on top of things. Hours after even MSNBC had admitted the perp was a black male, Adams was on TV, vowing to catch the man \u2014 \u201cor woman!\u201d \u2014 who perpetrated this attack.<\/p>\n<p>Gosh, that makes me feel validated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Weird that the media didn\u2019t cite Ketanji Brown Jackson\u2019s height and weight as her most important characteristics.
