We are making progress. The White House seems more open to it than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Common Dreams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/13\/keep-fighting-schumer-making-progress-canceling-student-debt\">reported<\/a> that Schumer \u201csaid he and other advocates on Capitol Hill are \u2018making progress\u2019 in convincing the president to cancel at least $50,000 per borrower, which Biden could direct Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to do instead of relying on Congress to pass legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to a Business Insider reporter, Schumer also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arsheffey\/status\/1514282365782310913\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a>, \u201cCollege is so expensive that even if you work your butt off, you\u2019re not going to be able to emerge without this huge amount of debt on your shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSchumer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenSchumer<\/a> speaking now at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DebtCrisisOrg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DebtCrisisOrg<\/a> virtual summit: &#8220;College is so expensive that even if you work your butt off, you&#8217;re not going to be able to emerge without this huge amount of debt on your shoulders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ayelet Sheffey (@arsheffey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arsheffey\/status\/1514282365782310913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/senate\/3266646-schumer-white-house-closer-to-cancelling-student-debt-than-ever-before\/\"><span class=\"s1\">The Hill<\/span><\/a>, Schumer claimed that families will have an average student debt payment of $393 per month when the pause is ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThat is so much money. How does anybody live knowing every month I got to pay this $400?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou get out of college, and you have all this debt,\u201d he said. \u201cI have told the president this is one of the most important things he can do to help our economy. We all want the economy to grow. We all want people to have good lives, where you can provide for yourself and your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe want our young people to realize that they can have a good future. One of the best, very best, top-of-the-list ways to do it is by canceling student debt, by getting rid of the $50,000, even going higher after that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Biden has reportedly said he is in support of canceling $10,000 for each student debt borrower, but he wants Congress to pass a measure in order to take such action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Biden recently extended the pause on student loan payments, sliding the student debt repayment start date from May 1 to August 31, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/obamas-former-economic-adviser-condemns-bidens-very-hard-to-understand-student-debt-repayment-pause\"><span class=\"s1\">The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a>. Biden has extended the pause multiple times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, the president said that the extension would \u201cenable Americans to continue to get back on their feet after two of the hardest years this nation has ever faced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Critics have pushed back against the idea of canceling student debt, especially after prior generations have had to pay off their own and the economy continues to struggle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, Biden has faced pressure from several groups, as well as progressive members of Congress, to entirely get rid of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In December, more than 200 groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/teachers-unions-aclu-want-biden-to-extend-student-loan-repayment-pause-cancel-student-debt\"><span class=\"s1\">called<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Biden to prolong the pause, and go even further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIn fewer than 60 days, tens of millions of student loan borrowers are slated to be thrown back into repayment on federal student loans they are ill-equipped to pay as the deadly COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate Americans\u2019 health and financial security,\u201d the organizations told Biden. \u201cIt is clear that payments should not resume until your administration has fully delivered on the promises you made to student loan borrowers to fix the broken student loan system and cancel federal student debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
