Gainesville Woman Care, the abortion provider challenging the law, had filed a motion to stay. The court denied it.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-hour waiting period law was enacted in 2015. It strengthened preexisting informed consent provisions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/1325\">Women\u2019s Right to Know Act<\/a> by requiring that the abortionist or the referring physician make \u201cinformed consent disclosures\u201d to the mother \u201cat least 24 hours before the procedure\u201d except in life-threatening emergencies, the court order says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the United States Supreme Court has acknowledged,\u201d the order says \u201cwhether to have an abortion poses \u2018a difficult and painful moral decision,\u2019 and women who regret that decision may experience \u2018regret,\u2019 \u2018severe depression,\u2019 \u2018loss of esteem,\u2019 \u2018grief,\u2019 and \u2018sorrow.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abortion supporters, the order says, had argued that the 24-hour waiting period \u201cimpinges on the women\u2019s right of privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Florida argued that the law was to protect women from pressure by abortion doctors and failures by the abortion industry to \u201cgive women the necessary time to consider the important informed consent disclosures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state also argued that abortion providers, the plaintiffs, \u201cgenerate income from providing abortions and generate more profits if they can do those abortions without a 24-hour waiting period.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FL is now a 24 hour mandatory delay state meaning that in order to access an abortion you have to make at least 2 trips to a health center 24 hours apart. Eskamani \ud83d\udd28 (@AnnaForFlorida) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnnaForFlorida\/status\/1513550821165867010?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis mandatory delay and\u00a0additional trip requirement\u00a0is an insult to all Floridians, but it will\u00a0have particularly harsh consequences for patients with low incomes, because of the significant financial costs that HB633\u2019s extra-trip requirement imposes\u2014including missed work, lost wages, and significantly increased transportation and child care costs,\u201d the ACLU of Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/cases\/gainesville-woman-care-llc-v-state-florida\">said in a March press release<\/a>\u00a0after the court\u00a0indicated it would rule for the State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law also jeopardizes patients\u2019 health and undermines the privacy of Floridians\u2019 abortion decisions,\u201d the progressive organization added.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-life win comes as Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/florida\/2022\/03\/04\/desantis-poised-to-sign-15-week-abortion-limit-bill\/\">preps to sign<\/a> a bill that bans abortions after 15 weeks in the state of Florida.
