For instance, trying to take retaliation out of the game when a teammate gets drilled, putting their sole focus on analytics, and checking pitchers in between innings for \u201csticky substances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But on Wednesday afternoon, the move by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts took the cake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In his first start of the season, soon-to-be Hall of Fame pitcher Clayton Kershaw was perfect through seven innings, striking out 13 Minnesota Twins while throwing just 80 pitches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are a few unwritten rules of baseball \u2014 you don\u2019t bunt to break up a no-hitter, don\u2019t admire your home run, and you don\u2019t pull a pitcher when he\u2019s throwing a no-hitter or a perfect game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kershaw was pulled at the start of the eighth inning, with the Dodgers holding a 3-0 lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Clayton Kershaw exits the game after 7 Perfect innings and 13 Strikeouts on 80 pitches <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KuCHXOD9Ck\">pic.twitter.com\/KuCHXOD9Ck<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/barstoolsports\/status\/1514322771643351047?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t really know who to blame here. Did Kershaw fight to stay in the game and Roberts went against his wishes? Or did Kershaw feel that he had reached his limit, not wanting to push it so early in the season?<\/p>\n<p>Either way, it doesn\u2019t matter. You don\u2019t pull a pitcher in the middle of a perfect game.<\/p>\n<p><span>Now, it was a cold day in Minneapolis, and MLB\u2019s lockout has made it so that pitchers are not as fully ramped-up as they\u2019d usually be to start the season, but that\u2019s no excuse. In the long and storied history of Major League Baseball, there have been just 23 perfect games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Social media correctly was floored by Roberts\u2019 decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf it\u2019s a no-hitter, whatever. We\u2019re trying to win. That\u2019s really all we\u2019re here for. As much as I would\u2019ve wanted to do it, I\u2019ve thrown 75 pitches in a sim [simulation] game. I hadn\u2019t gone six innings, let alone seven.
