Secretary of State Antony Blinken has publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jonathanponciano\/2021\/04\/11\/biden-secretary-of-state-condemns-chinas-acts-of-genocide-against-muslim-uyghurs\/?sh=7d5d987950ca\">called<\/a> the extermination of Uyghurs and other groups in the region a genocide, following the declaration by predecessor Mike Pompeo.<\/p>\n<p>The Uyghur Tribunal, an independent group of human rights attorneys studying the matter, ruled in December that China had \u201cbeyond a reasonable doubt\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/09\/tribunal-olympics-host-china-beyond-a-reasonable-doubt-guilty-of-genocide\/\">committed<\/a> genocide, explicitly citing the use of infanticide, forced abortion, and forced sterilization as showing intent to destroy these communities. The Tribunal concluded that evidence confirmed Xi had personally ordered the genocide to take place.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has rarely addressed the situation and\u00a0has been hesitant to personally use similar language to call out China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/news\/politics\/2021\/04\/02\/is-china-committing-genocide-what-you-need-know-uyghurs\/7015211002\/\">atrocities<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/02\/17\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-a-cnn-town-hall-with-anderson-cooper\/\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The idea I\u2019m not going to speak out against what he\u2019s doing in Hong Kong, what he\u2019s doing with the Uyghurs in western mountains of China and Taiwan, trying to end the One China policy by making it forceful \u2014 I said \u2014 and by the \u2014 he said he \u2014 he gets it.\u00a0 Culturally, there are different norms that each country and they \u2014 their leaders \u2014 are expected to follow.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Biden has resisted personally criticizing Xi, though his proxies have done so. During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden\u2019s spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/08\/25\/trump-administration-china-genocide-uighurs-401581\">described<\/a> the atrocities against the Uyghurs as \u201cgenocide\u201d in a statement noting that \u201cJoe Biden stands against it in the strongest terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet Biden himself frequently boasts of his alleged friendship with Xi during his speeches, including an appearance last week to celebrate the confirmation vote for his Supreme Court justice nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in the foothills of the Himalayas with Xi Jinping, traveling with him,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/04\/08\/remarks-by-president-biden-vice-president-harris-and-judge-ketanji-brown-jackson-on-the-senates-historic-bipartisan-confirmation-of-judge-jackson-to-be-an-associate-justice-of-the-supreme-court\/\">mused<\/a>. \u201cTraveled 17,000 miles when I was Vice President at the time.
