According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2022\/apr\/12\/northern-ireland-england-womens-world-cup-2023-qualifier-match-report\"><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span>, Northern Ireland gave up four goals in the second half during a 27-minute stretch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the loss was certainly deflating, it was the comments by Northern Ireland manager Kenny Shiels which made headlines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shiels insinuated that women are more likely to give up multiple goals in quick succession because \u201c<span>girls and women are more emotional than men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI thought we outwitted them for long periods until it was 2-0,\u201d Shiels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/blog\/2022\/apr\/13\/kenny-shiels-talk-of-emotional-women-is-unacceptable-football-deserves-better\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> after the loss. \u201cWe knew exactly what they were going to do before they did it. We spoke about it. I felt they were struggling a wee bit at times to open us up until the psychology of going 2-0 up in the women\u2019s game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m sure you will have noticed if you go through the patterns \u2013 when a team concedes a goal, they concede a second one in a very, very short space of time, right through the whole spectrum of the women\u2019s game, because girls and women are more emotional than men,\u201d Shiels continued. \u201cSo, they take a goal going in not very well. When we went 1-0 down we tried to slow it down to give them time to get that emotional imbalance out of their heads. That\u2019s an issue we have. Not just in Northern Ireland but all of the countries in the world. I shouldn\u2019t have told you that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Shiels comments immediately drew condemnation, including from former Arsenal soccer player Ian Wright.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cKenny Shiels talking foolishness!\u201d Wright posted to Twitter. \u201cTalking about emotional women! Didn\u2019t that man see how many times I was crying on the PITCH! I am sorry for the offence that they have caused,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/sport\/football\/international\/northern-ireland-women-manager-kenny-shiels-apologises-for-post-match-comments-after-england-defeat-41550217.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Shiels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLast night was a special occasion for the women\u2019s game in Northern Ireland and I am proud to manage a group of players who are role models for so many girls, and boys, across the country,\u201d Shiels continued. \u201cI am an advocate for the women\u2019s game and passionate about developing opportunities for women and girls to flourish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s the second time in as many days that a sports figure has found himself in trouble after making comments about women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Monday, video of free-agent NFL quarterback Cam Newton on the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PgT2GU9ZiPo\"><span>Million Dollaz Worth of Game<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d podcast circled the internet, and Newton quickly found himself in hot water over his comments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI had a perfect, perfect example of what a man was by my father,\u201d Newton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mediaite\/status\/1513556750657589254?s=20&#038;t=-v6IiJw2wQK6ImTzxnSCdw\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cMy parents have been together for 36, 37 years now, and it\u2019s a beautiful thing. I grew up in a three-parent household \u2014 my mom, my father and my grandmother. And I knew what a woman was. Not a bad b****. A woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newton explained that a \u201cbad b****\u201d is a woman who \u201clooks the part\u201d but doesn\u2019t \u201cact the part.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd it\u2019s a lot of women who are bad b******, and I say \u2018b******\u2019 in a way not to degrade a woman but just to go off the aesthetic of what they deem as a \u2018boss chick,\u2019\u201d Newton continued. \u201cA woman for me is handling your own but knowing how to cater to a man\u2019s needs,\u201d Newton continued. \u201cI think a lot of times when you get that aesthetic of like \u2018I\u2019m a boss b****, I\u2019m a this, I\u2019m a that,\u2019 no baby. But you can\u2019t cook. You don\u2019t know when to be quiet. You don\u2019t know how to allow a man to lead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As expected, social media jumped all over Newton\u2019s comments, though Newton did go on to explain that he feels that it\u2019s time for \u201cmen to start being men.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m also going to start telling the men to start being men,\u201d Newton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PgT2GU9ZiPo?t=493\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThat sucka s*** should not be rewarded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen a person carries himself social media wise, and it\u2019s a fraud in real life,\u201d Newton elaborated. \u201cEvery person that has money, every person that\u2019s rich, isn\u2019t a real one.
