Richard Hilderbrand said Kelly must have \u201cseen some polling\u201d before deciding to sign the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Winn of the Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity called Kelly\u2019s move \u201ca failure of leadership,\u201d \u201cpolitical cowardice,\u201d and a \u201cmoral betrayal.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that there are Kansas political leaders from both parties guided more by personal ambition than the common good of our state,\u201d Winn said. \u201cMoving forward, we plan to remind all our elected officials, regardless of party or position, that they work for the people and hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Kansas City Star<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article260315775.html\"> reported<\/a> on the development, including that the bill was proposed by her likely November challenger, Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder this new law, Kansas law enforcement will be able to resume working professionally with federal immigration authorities as the needs of public safety require and not be silenced by a patchwork of local \u2018sanctuary city\u2019 gag orders,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Star<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Kelly indicated last month she was unlikely to sign the bill, citing her support for local control. But in a statement Monday, she echoed Schmidt and other Republicans, asserting that immigration \u201ccannot be resolved at a municipal level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage my colleagues who sent me this bill to persuade our federal delegation to pass comprehensive immigration legislation that allows us to continue growing our economy and meeting our workforce needs here in Kansas,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>Wyandotte County passed the \u201csafe and welcoming\u201d ordinance in February, establishing a municipal identification card and limiting how the Unified Government and KCK [Kansas City Kansas] police department would work with federal immigration authorities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The bill still lets Wyandotte County issue municipal IDs but they cannot be used for official state business like voting.
