Variety <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/fantastic-beasts-3-gay-dialogue-removed-warner-bros-explains-1235230373\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201cgay dialogue\u201d was removed from the Chinese version of \u201cFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore\u201d but the \u201cspirit of the film remains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHarry Potter\u201d author J.K. Rowling had already informed fans that Dumbledore was gay in 2009. The previous installment of the \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d series never addressed the character\u2019s sexuality explicitly, however, this latest release does make a passing reference to it. In total, six seconds were cut from China\u2019s release of \u201cSecrets of Dumbledore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Apparently, the omitted scene \u201calluded to the romantic past between male characters Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen),\u201d per Variety. Warner Bros. agreed to China\u2019s demand to cut the lines \u201cbecause I was in love with you\u201d and \u201cthe summer Gellert and I fell in love.\u201d The two men are seen as having a very close intimate relationship, but without these lines it\u2019s never made clear that their feelings for each other were romantic in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a studio, we\u2019re committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film we release, and that extends to circumstances that necessitate making nuanced cuts in order to respond sensitively to a variety of in-market factors,\u201d Warner Bros. said in a statement. \u201cOur hope is to release our features worldwide as released by their creators but historically we have faced small edits made in local markets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn the case of \u2018Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,\u2019 a six-second cut was requested and Warner Bros. accepted those changes to comply with local requirements but the spirit of the film remains intact,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe want audiences everywhere in the world to see and enjoy this film, and it\u2019s important to us that Chinese audiences have the opportunity to experience it as well, even with these minor edits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The movie was released in China on April 8, one week ahead of the American release on April 15. Variety reported that \u201cSecrets of Dumbledore\u201d earned $9.7 million (per current exchange rates) in the first three days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This obviously isn\u2019t the first time American films were edited for release in other countries, including China. Earlier this year, some Chinese viewers had harsh criticism for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fight-club-author-approves-of-chinas-censored-movie-ending-says-this-is-super-wonderful\"><span>completely rewritten version<\/span><\/a><span> of the 1999 cult classic \u201cFight Club\u201d released on China\u2019s streaming platform Tencent Video.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The original version ended with massive explosions that signified the triumph of anarchy. Meanwhile, the censored version available in China cut off before the bombs went off because police managed to ruin the main character\u2019s plan.
