Really?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we got support from the U.S. government to fight crime, but the was UNDER THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.<\/p>\n<p>You are only supporting the gangs and their \u201ccivil liberties\u201d now. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SJK4vEVYcs\">https:\/\/t.co\/SJK4vEVYcs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nayib Bukele (@nayibbukele) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1513659282566361102?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Bukele was responding to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/violence-and-threats-to-free-speech-in-el-salvador\/\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span> from Biden\u2019s Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who expressed concerns about El Salvador\u2019s crackdown on gang activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In particular, Blinken said a new Salvadoran law that criminalizes \u201creporting on certain gang activities\u201d could lead to \u201cattempts to censor the media, prevent reporting on corruption and other matters of public interest, and silence critics of the Salvadoran government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Blinken said the Biden administration is also \u201cdeeply concerned by the spike in violence and homicides committed by the MS-13 and the Barrio 18 gangs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_17431426\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GettyImages-1228349276.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17431426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GettyImages-1228349276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the MS-13 and 18 gangs remain inside their cells during a visit by the Director of the General Directorate of Penal Centers, Osiris Luna (out of frame), at the maximum security prison in Izalco, Sonsonate, El Salvador, on September 4, 2020. (YURI CORTEZ\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe continue to support El Salvador in its efforts to reduce the proliferation of gangs,\u201d Blinken said. \u201cSince 2008, we have invested $411 million to improve citizen security and help the Salvadoran government combat gang violence. Examples include the construction of a state-of-the-art forensics lab in Nuevo Cuscatlan, and assistance to reclaim and renovate public spaces such as Parque Cuscatlan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bukele pushed back against Blinken\u2019s claims, insisting most of the meaningful assistance against gang violence received by the Salvadoran government came during the Trump administration, while Biden has been diverting money to \u201ccivil society groups\u201d instead of gang-busting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI have the receipts,\u201d Bukele said, linking to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/news-information\/press-releases\/may-21-2021-usaid-redirects-assistance-salvadoran-government-institutions-civil-society\"><span>May 2021 post<\/span><\/a><span> from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The USAID bulletin said funding would be taken from the Salvadoran National Civilian Police and other law enforcement agencies and used instead for \u201cpromoting transparency, combating corruption, and monitoring human rights in partnership with local civil society and human rights organizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>USAID said it did this because of \u201cdeep concerns regarding the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly\u2019s May 1st vote to remove the Attorney General and all five magistrates of the Constitutional Chamber of El Salvador\u2019s Supreme Court, and larger concerns about transparency and accountability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The Biden administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/el-salvador-7f36ddc643beb49707c3a0a5887f7d4b\"><span>criticized<\/span><\/a><span> the legislature\u2019s vote to remove the Attorney General and Supreme Court justices as a power grab by Bukele that would damage the democratic institutions of El Salvador. The Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations also criticized the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bukele and his supporters viewed the removals as a necessary bit of housecleaning to reduce corruption. (MARVIN RECINOS\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>El Salvador\u2019s security forces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/el-salvador-detains-more-than-9-000-people-in-gang-crackdown-11649703587\"><span>arrested<\/span><\/a><span> over 9,000 people over the past two weeks, using emergency powers granted by the legislature to control organized crime following a wave of gang killings. Critics of the crackdown claim many of the arrests were arbitrary and targeted impoverished young people. They also criticized the harsh conditions imposed on the detainees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bukele insisted the arrests were appropriate \u2013 describing the 9,000 taken into custody so far as merely a good start \u2013 and said the rough detentions were a necessary deterrent. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1512889544403828743\"><span>argued<\/span><\/a><span> gang members are far too accustomed to skipping out of prison quickly, so they view arrest as a minor inconvenience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have confiscated everything, even the sleeping mats. We are rationing food and they will no longer see the sun.
