The focus of K-12 education should be academics, not activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free to Learn\u2019s letter to the governor notes that it is more important than ever to \u201crecognize actions that foster an environment primed for student success and parental\u201d at a time when \u201cK-12 education has become increasingly political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last two years we have seen students fall farther and farther behind because of school shutdowns, virtual learning, and overall poor leadership from adults entrusted with our children\u2019s success,\u201d the letter said. \u201cInstead of a focused recovery, these institutional education entities are currently engaged in a widespread push to de-emphasize academic achievement in the name of activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis political agenda does not benefit students and is also out of touch with the academic\u00a0achievement parents seek for their children,\u201d the letter continued. \u201cFree to Learn and the parents we support want an\u00a0education system that will set our children up for productive and successful adult lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GovRonDeSantis<\/a> has signed HB1467 requiring schools to publicly disclose all curriculum to parents:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parents have a fundamental role to be involved in the education of their kids. That&#8217;s how it&#8217;s going to be in the state of Florida.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nLgzqtwMjD\">pic.twitter.com\/nLgzqtwMjD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 American Principles \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@approject) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/approject\/status\/1507413578181140481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>HB 1467 comes in \u201cthe Year of the Parent,\u201d the governor\u2019s office said in a press release when DeSantis signed the legislation, noting that HB 1467 is focused on empowering parents to make decisions about what their children are exposed to.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which also sets 12-year term limits for school board members, requires schools to \u201cnotice\u201d and keep meetings on the selection of school instructional materials open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>School districts must provide parents with access to all the proposed materials at least 20 days before the school board takes official action, according to the bill, and the state Department of Education (DOE) must publish a list of the removed or discontinued materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida, our parents have every right to be involved in their child\u2019s education,\u201d DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2022\/03\/25\/governor-ron-desantis-signs-bill-that-requires-curriculum-transparency\/\">said in a statement at the time.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe are not going to let politicians deny parents the right to know what is being taught in our schools. I\u2019m proud to sign this legislation that ensures curriculum transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marr\u00e9\u2019s letter to the governor notes that Free to Learn understands \u201cfar too well that many decisions about curriculum are often made without an\u00a0opportunity for parental engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only with a supportive environment, like that created\u00a0with the Curriculum Transparency Bill, that parents can hold the education establishment\u00a0accountable for the instructional materials being utilized in the classroom,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The letter also applauded HB 1467\u2019s limit of school board members to 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new system\u00a0of checks and balances only stands to benefit students,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s important that elected education\u00a0leadership is responsive to and representative of their constituency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLongtime school board\u00a0members risk becoming too comfortable with the status quo, and easily swayed by powerful\u00a0institutional entities which can make them lose touch with their ultimate customers \u2013 K-12\u00a0students and their parents,\u201d Marr\u00e9 added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly believe that the Curriculum Transparency Bill will empower parents to advocate on\u00a0behalf of their children and ensure the next generation has an opportunity to attain the education\u00a0they deserve,\u201d she told the governor. \u201cThank you for your strong leadership and willingness to stand up for parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after he signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-signs-bill-requiring-transparency-from-schools-on-reading-materials\">Curriculum Transparency Bill<\/a>, DeSantis also signed the state\u2019s Parental Rights in Education legislation, a bill banning classroom instruction about gender identity and sexual orientation for small children.<\/p>\n<p>The bill has been wildly misrepresented as \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d legislation by critics who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/floridas-lgbtq-bill-is-being-wildly-misrepresented-here-are-the-facts\">most notably have taken issue<\/a> with HB 1557\u2019s statement that\u00a0\u201cclassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in kindergarten are typically five years old, while third graders generally are eight or nine years old.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere in the legislation is the word \u201cgay\u201d mentioned, though the word \u201cparent\u201d is mentioned 32 times and the word \u201cparental\u201d is mentioned eight times. The legislation heavily focuses on parental notification and parental awareness of what children are being taught or exposed to in school.<\/p>\n<p>Leftist activists know that Americans overwhelmingly oppose indoctrinating children with sexual or gender ideology, DeSantis said the day he signed the bill, pointing to polling, like that done by outlets like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/exclusive-poll-over-60-of-americans-back-floridas-limits-on-k-3-lessons-on-sexual-orientation-and-gender-identity\">The Daily Wire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/another-poll-finds-americans-dont-want-sexual-orientation-gender-identity-in-the-classroom-for-k-3-graders\">POLITICO<\/a>, that showed most Americans don\u2019t want gender identity being taught in schools<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone told me that there\u2019s even people in Hollywood that are opposed to providing protections for parents and enforcing parents rights,\u201d he added. \u201cThe one thing I\u2019ll say about that: the people who held up degenerates like Harvey Weinstein as exemplars, if those are the types of people opposing us on parents rights, I wear that like a badge of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
