The updated information panel alongside the piece of artwork now notes the female\u2019s \u201cenigmatic expression is unsettling, especially as she appears to be interacting with a male customer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/04\/11\/gallery-highlights-male-gaze-manet-masterpiece-woke-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with The Telegraph, Art historian Ruth Millington called the labeling a \u201cwoke attempt to call out misogyny.\u201d She added the new interpretation shifts the attention to the man\u2019s gaze rather than the traditional understanding that has focused on the woman in Manet\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a painting of multiple gazes, it\u2019s unfair and misogynistic to emphasize the male perspective,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Feels good to have a feminist art history hot take in today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Telegraph?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Telegraph<\/a> \ud83d\udcab <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8hamiKr8c8\">pic.twitter.com\/8hamiKr8c8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ruth Millington (@ruth_millington) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ruth_millington\/status\/1513828369858707457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Manet\u2019s painting was not the only artwork to receive a new woke label.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Paul Gauguin\u2019s 1897 painting \u201cNevermore\u201d also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10710547\/Manet-masterpiece-given-MISOGYNY-alert-male-gaze-Londons-Courtauld-gallery.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated information<\/a> that reveals the art depicts \u201cone of several teenagers that he took on as \u2018wives.\u2019 The widespread racist fantasy of Tahitian girls as sexually precocious led to their unabashed exploitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The updates are part of a reported \u00a357 million refurbishment (over $74 million USD) at the London gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The changes were reported shortly after a U.K. university course on acclaimed author Jane Austen was temporarily canceled.<\/p>\n<p>Stirling University announced last week that it is replacing the traditional course with a course by Toni Morrison, an author known for writing about the African-American experience.<\/p>\n<p>The school reportedly noted the change would help in the \u201cdecolonisation of the curriculum,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.uk\/news\/jane-austen-cancelled-as-university-course-drops-literary-legend-to-decolonise-curriculum\/266107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> GBN, Britain\u2019s News Channel.<\/p>\n<p>J.K. Rowling, the bestselling U.K. author best known for her Harry Potter series, has also been under recent online attacks over her views. The Daily Wire recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitter-deletes-trans-activist-video-with-j-k-rowling-death-threat-after-initially-saying-it-didnt-violate-safety-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Twitter finally took down a video posted by transgender activist and singer Faye Fadem with a \u201cdeath threat\u201d against J.K. Rowling after initially deciding it didn\u2019t violate the site\u2019s \u201csafety policies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Fadem, who releases music under the name \u201cTrust Fund Ozu,\u201d\u00a0posted a music video on April 1 in part directed at the famed \u201cHarry Potter\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/j-k-rowling-slams-new-transgender-bill-she-says-will-hurt-the-most-vulnerable-women\">author<\/a>\u00a0with the lyrics, \u201cAs I kill (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists)\u201d and \u201cJ.K.
