Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/E22C9575-2D54-4C0D-9830-122E9D078374_1_201_a.jpeg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Democratic Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a controversial abortion bill into law that codifies abortion access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Known as the \u201cReproductive Health Equity Act,\u201d the measure specifically codifies into law the idea that a fetus does not have human rights prior to birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The law states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>A FERTILIZED EGG, EMBRYO, OR FETUS DOES NOT HAVE INDEPENDENT OR DERIVATIVE RIGHTS UNDER THE LAWS OF THIS STATE.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb22-1279\"><span class=\"s1\">summary<\/span><\/a> of the bill explains that it bans state and local public entities from interfering in any way in a woman\u2019s reproductive decisions \u2013 specifically regarding abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It notes that the bill \u201cprohibits state and local public entities\u201d from \u201cDenying, restricting, interfering with, or discriminating against an individual\u2019s fundamental right to use or refuse contraception or to continue a pregnancy and give birth or to have an abortion in the regulation or provision of benefits, services, information, or facilities\u201d and \u201cDepriving, through prosecution, punishment, or other means, an individual of the individual\u2019s right to act or refrain from acting during the individual\u2019s own pregnancy based on the potential, actual, or perceived impact on the pregnancy, the pregnancy\u2019s outcomes, or on the pregnant individual\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Polis released a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1MVHdAJmMvvX8i4JvwAKQ4TE825oc1Cmv\/view\"><span class=\"s1\">statement<\/span><\/a> about the bill on Monday, saying, \u201cIn the State of Colorado, the serious decision to start or end a pregnancy with medical assistance will remain between a person, their doctor, and their faith.\u201d The state will not intervene on behalf of an unborn person, because in Colorado they are not legally defined as a person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Polis also made the point that the \u201cbill does not make any changes to the current legal framework for parental notification that exists in state law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com\/article\/news\/local\/next\/colorado-abortion-parental-notification\/73-21f780be-bb7d-47be-a677-d4441432904a\"><span class=\"s3\">9News<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThe Colorado Parental Notification Act requires parents of minors to be notified at least 48 hours prior to a pending abortion. \u2026 Even a parent is notified of a minor\u2019s abortion and objects, the decision to receive an abortion still rests with the minor. The law only requires that the parent be notified.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">T<\/span>he text of the law also specifically references <i>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization,<\/i> which is the Mississippi case that the Supreme Court is set to decide on this summer that could potentially reverse <i>Roe v. Wade.<\/i><span class=\"s2\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s4\">In addition, ob<\/span>servers have noted that the only time the word \u201cwomen\u201d appears in the bill is in reference to the name of the case, leading some to interpret this as evidence that the bill could also be intended as another push from the Left\u2019s the culture war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Colorado law also doesn\u2019t have any limitations on abortion when it comes to timing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even the most progressive states generally limit abortion at the point of viability, which is around 20-24 weeks \u2013 or they have some kind of limitations after that. This is also late by international standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF21K55.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">report<\/span><\/a> by the Family Research Council, the U.S. is one of only six countries that allows abortion on demand through the entire nine months of pregnancy.
