It has nothing to do with the current conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook video, first uploaded March 8, features numerous clips of soldiers engaging in combat around a mountainous area. \u201cUkraine vs Russia fight scene,\u201d reads the post\u2019s caption, suggesting the footage stems from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/04\/11\/world\/ukraine-russia-war-news?name=styln-russia-ukraine&#038;region=hub&#038;block=storyline_live_updates_block_recirc&#038;action=click&#038;pgtype=LegacyCollection#the-next-big-battle-the-ukraine-war-will-likely-look-very-different-experts-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ongoing war<\/a> in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The footage is unrelated to the war in Ukraine. An internet search reveals all the footage can be found in an August 2021 YouTube video shared by the verified channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7_zDiZiZqSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WarLeaks \u2013 Military Blog<\/a> titled, \u201cFrench Foreign Legion In Heavy Combat With Taliban In Afghanistan.\u201d The French Foreign Legion is an elite French military force made up of volunteers, from France and abroad, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/French-Foreign-Legion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britannica<\/a>.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>\u201cThe scenes show the elite units of the French Foreign Legion in several intense firefights and engagements with Taliban fighters,\u201d part of the video description reads. French flag patches are visible on some of the soldiers\u2019 uniforms, and voices can be heard speaking French above the gunfire.<\/p>\n<p>There are no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=french+foreign+legion+deployed+to+ukraine&#038;oq=French+Foreign+Legion+deployed+to+Ukraine&#038;aqs=chrome.0.0i512j0i390l5.8163j0j7&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news reports<\/a> suggesting the French government has deployed any troops or the legion to Ukraine. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/03\/11\/fact-check-elderly-man-evacuation-ukraine-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Picture Show An Elderly Man Evacuating Ukraine With His Cat In March 2022?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>France has advised citizens not to become part of the armed Ukrainian resistance, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksyy\u2019s call for foreigners to join an \u201cInternational Legion\u201d to help Ukraine fight the Russians, according to state-owned media outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/europe\/20220329-france-and-other-eu-countries-call-on-citizens-not-to-join-ukraine-s-fight-against-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radio France International<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time combat footage has been misattributed to the conflict in Ukraine. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/02\/28\/fact-check-ukraine-russia-battle-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check Your Fact<\/a> recently debunked a video that claimed to show fighting in Ukraine but actually showed a U.S.-led combat mission in Iraq in 2004.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows combat between Russian and Ukrainian forces.Facebook\/ScreenshotVerdict: False The footage depicts French Foreign Legion members fighting in Afghanistan.
