The European Union also implemented travel bans and asset freezes on five Russian individuals.\n<\/p>\n<p>By February 22, the United Kingdom froze the assets of five Russian banks, and Germany suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2, a vital part of Russia\u2019s future economic planning. Import bans were implemented in the European Union, the United States sanctions major Russian banks, and Russia was cut off from the SWIFT messaging system effectively blocking Russian transactions with Western countries and financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Along with major Western businesses cutting ties with Russia \u2013 including McDonald\u2019s, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/mcdonalds-russia-close-1.6383941\">shut all of its 847 restaurants<\/a> in the country \u2013 and it\u2019s not surprising that economists predict Russia\u2019s economy is heading for the worst recession since the collapse of the Soviet Union.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia and Economic Collapse: It\u2019s Only A Matter of Time?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>With the value of the Russian ruble plummeting, the nation\u2019s economy is already experiencing turbulence. It is only a matter of time before that turbulence becomes a full-scale recession.\n<\/p>\n<p>So far, Russia has held off major economic trouble by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-09\/card\/moscow-limits-foreign-currency-trading-to-shore-up-struggling-ruble-dgTDTQdEOkO3wgoFyC3I\">introducing capital controls<\/a>, limiting foreign-currency trading and blocking how many dollars Russians can withdraw from foreign-currency bank accounts and also raising interest rates to bolster the ruble.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Russian central bank announced at the end of February that it would free 733 billion rubles in local bank reserves to boost liquidity and would increase interest rates from 9.5% to 20% \u2013 a move designed to \u201coffset increased risk of ruble depreciation and inflation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/28\/russia-central-bank-hikes-interest-rates-to-20percent-from-9point5percent-to-bolster-ruble.html\">according to the central bank<\/a>. The move incentivized Russians to keep their currency in Russian bank accounts as lines began forming outside of ATMs across the country with concerned Russians attempting to withdraw as much as they could from the banks.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Russian central bank dropped the interest rate slightly from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/live\/2022\/apr\/08\/air-travel-uk-airports-disruption-easter-getaway-roads-dover-cost-of-living-business-live?filterKeyEvents=false&#038;page=with:block-624ff6868f083703c7bd83c9#block-624ff6868f083703c7bd83c9\">said.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to an analysis from the Institute of International Finance last month, however, Russia\u2019s economy will likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/global-emerging-iif-idUSKCN2L7247\">shrink by 15%<\/a> this year and continued boycotts of Russian oil and natural gas will also hurt the country\u2019s economic situation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther escalation of the war may bring more boycotts of Russian energy, which would drastically impair Russia\u2019s ability to import goods and services, deepening the recession,\u201d the IIF wrote in a note signed by many of its senior economists.\n<\/p>\n<p>Fears of economic collapse have already prompted large numbers of Russians to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kenrapoza\/2022\/03\/05\/russians-fleeing-as-nation-faces-economic-collapse\/?sh=4e240d387089\">flee the country<\/a>, but how badly sanctions will impact the country long-term is hard to predict at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Russia may not have entirely collapsed, but a recession is on the way.\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Buckby is a British author, counter-extremism researcher, and journalist based in New York.
