The announcement comes weeks after Raffensperger said the state completed the first citizenship <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/news\/citizenship-audit-finds-1634-noncitizens-attempted-register-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audit<\/a> of the state\u2019s voter rolls.<\/p>\n<p>According to a news <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/news\/citizenship-audit-finds-1634-noncitizens-attempted-register-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>, the audit identified 1,634 non-citizens as having attempted to register to vote. The state could not verify the non-citizens through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\u2019 (USCIS) Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Attempting to register to vote by an individual who knows he or she is ineligible is a violation of Georgia law,&#8221; Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Chris Arnt said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said that no non-citizens were allowed to register to vote. Instead, the would-be voters were placed in pending status and asked to provide proof of citizenship before casting a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Raffensperger, the subject of former President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/voting-rights-2022-midterm-elections-elections-donald-trump-georgia-ddd81d22b571a71fce1628482e02e801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticisms<\/a>, is undoubtedly trying to use the case to strengthen his position as tough on election malfeasance. He used the state-issued news release to lambast Stacey Abrams, a Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for governor four years ago and is running again this year.<\/p>\n<p>Fair Fight Action, a group Abrams started, is <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfight.com\/mon-4-11-530pm-et-fair-fight-action-inc-v-raffensperger-opening-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging<\/a> Georgia\u2019s rules, saying it violates federal law.<\/p>\n<p>The audit uncovered attempted registrations by non-citizens in 88 counties across The Peach State. While the attempts occurred between 1997 and February 24, 2022, most of the attempted registrations \u2014 80.7% or 1,319 \u2014 have occurred since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>DeKalb County had the highest number of attempted non-citizen registrants with 345, followed by Fulton County (275) and Gwinnett County (221).
