Glenn Youngkin (R-Va.) campaigned on implementing a gas tax holiday. Youngkin has put forth a proposal to suspend the 26.2 cents per gallon gas tax through July, but\u00a0Virginia Democrats want to give every vehicle owner a $50 rebate instead. Under the Democrats&#8217; plan, the maximum a household could receive is $100.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s barely enough for a tank of gas,&#8221; Virginia House Majority Leader Terry Kilgore, a Republican, wrote<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/delterrykilgore\/status\/1512464493602906117?s=20&#038;t=tYsydDb8ifLO-qMIlmXVFw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0on Twitter<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s out of touch with working class families &#038; with the cost of doing business in VA. Get out of the bubble!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Democratic leaders have said they oppose a temporary gas tax holiday, in part, because it would benefit everyone who buys gas in the state and result in less taxpayer funding for infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;@GovernorVA&#8217;s gas tax plan helps oil companies and out-of-state drivers,&#8221; wrote Del. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EFillerCorn\/status\/1512449651336753156?s=20&#038;t=yCRTb_4mxXsTJamHs85E_A\">Eileen Filler-Corn<\/a>, the Democratic leader in the House of Delegates, on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Delegate Mike Webert said the state can afford a 3-month gas tax holiday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With revenues the way the state is right now, we have plenty of funds to cover a three-month hiatus from the gas tax,&#8221; Webert said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got billions of dollars coming from the federal government, so it&#8217;s not like we&#8217;re going to forgo a lot of construction projects. In fact, the chairman of our appropriations committee says everything is funded.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans in California have also proposed a state gas tax holiday, but Democratic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc10.com\/article\/news\/politics\/gas-tax-holiday-rebate-proposals\/103-ddf67fa6-5e0c-4ab6-b722-249fa330524d\">Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a>\u00a0has suggested a rebate as an alternative. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/03\/23\/governor-newsom-proposes-11-billion-relief-package-for-californians-facing-higher-gas-prices\/\">Newsom&#8217;s plan<\/a> includes providing $400 debit cards for each vehicle owned with an $800 cap.<\/p>\n<p>California has the highest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/509649\/us-states-with-highest-gas-tax-and-prices\/\">state gas tax<\/a> in the nation, followed by Pennsylvania, Illinois and New Jersey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, Georgia, Connecticut and Maryland have suspended their gas tax. Other states such as New York and New Jersey are considering doing the same amid surging fuel prices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/will-nj-suspend-its-gas-tax-to-curb-high-prices-heres-what-gov-murphy-says.html\">Gov. Phil Murphy (D-N.J.)<\/a> has said the federal government implementing one nationally would the &#8220;best move.&#8221; He&#8217;s also commented on proposed state legislation that would provide each driver with a $500 rebate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/holmdel-hazlet\/500-gas-tax-rebate-nj-some-residents-not-favor-patch-survey\">Murphy said<\/a> he&#8217;s &#8220;not against the rebate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to AAA, the national average price for regular gasoline is $4.32 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=10&#038;t=5\">The federal gas tax<\/a>, which is charged to drivers on top of the state gas tax, is currently 18.3 cents per gallon.
