Utah, Vermont and Nebraska led the categories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one piece of good news in this study is that states which maximized the individual freedoms of business owners, consumers, workers and parents \u2013 and allowed their citizens to make their own risk assessments without government mandates \u2013 had the best performance,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The three worst-ranked, along with Illinois, had \u201chigh age-adjusted death rates; they had high unemployment and significant GDP losses, and they kept their schools shut down longer than almost all other states,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WSJ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WSJ<\/a> reports a new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nberpubs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nberpubs<\/a> study shows Utah as the #1 state for best COVID-19 performance outcomes for economy, education, and mortality. The state ranked 6th in the state pandemic performance following behind all Republican-led states Utah, Nebraska, Vermont, Montana and South Dakota. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/23\/kids-breathe-florida-desantis-mask-mandates-cities-clamp-down-school-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018We Need Our Kids To Breathe\u2019: DeSantis Vows No Mask Mandates As Major US Cities Clamp Down While COVID-19 Cases Rise)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nevada, New York, New Jersey and Washington D.C. ranked highest in mortality rates, while Hawaii, Vermont, Maine and Oregon ranked the best in handling COVID mortality.<\/p>\n<p>The study found no correlation between travel, vocation and dining restrictions, the report says.\u00a0The report also said school closures connected with the 13.8 million student lives lost in the 2019-20 school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study verifies other studies which have found that locking down businesses, stores, churches, schools, and restaurants had almost no impact on health outcomes across states,\u201d the report determined. \u201cStates with strict lockdowns had virtually no better performance in COVID death rates than states that remained mostly open for business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Democratic New York <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/25\/andrew-cuomo-shames-ron-desantis-covid-response-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gov. Andrew Cuomo<\/a> claimed in 2020 that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was \u201cplaying politics\u201d with the pandemic. The governor came under fire just a year later for his state\u2019s undercounting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Department of Health (DOH) <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/05\/15\/new-york-coronavirus-reporting-nursing-home-deaths-undercounting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ordered<\/a> that COVID-positive nursing home patients could not be turned away from facilities and changed its reporting measures to only count patients who physically died in the facility.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis signed an executive order in July 2021 banning mask mandates in schools and protecting the rights of parents to decide whether their child is masked in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida, there will be no lockdowns, there will be no school closures, there will be no restrictions and no mandates in the state of Florida,\u201d DeSantis said during his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Californians held a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/14\/recall-gavin-newsom-campaign-california-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recall<\/a> election in September for Democratic California Gov.
