And based on that, we\u2019re gonna want to be guided by this decision. You know, throughout the entire pandemic, we\u2019ve wanted to make decisions based on the evidence and science and that is what I expect we\u2019ll do again this week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me just ask you, Dr. Jha, does that mean that extending the mask mandate on public transportation is a live option, it\u2019s on the table?\u201d Guthrie cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, this is a CDC decision, and I think it is absolutely on the table, and Dr. Walensky is gonna make her decision based on the framework that the CDC scientists create, and we\u2019ll make a decision collectively based on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SavannahGuthrie?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SavannahGuthrie<\/a> spoke with White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashishkjha?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ashishkjha<\/a> about the rising COVID cases and mask mandates. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OZX62EaN3o\">pic.twitter.com\/OZX62EaN3o<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TODAY (@TODAYshow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TODAYshow\/status\/1513479635253837826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the entire pandemic, we\u2019ve wanted to make decisions based on the evidence and science,\u201d Jha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/mask-mandate-planes-transport-may-get-extended-covid-czar-says-rcna23853\">told<\/a> Guthrie, adding, \u201cand that is what I expect we\u2019ll do again this week, once we have that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jha\u2019s comments come amid mounting pressure to end the mask mandate after the CDC previously extended the requirement on March 10. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/senate-votes-to-repeal-travel-mask-mandates-in-bipartisan-rebuke-of-biden-admin\">Senate<\/a> voted with a bipartisan majority, 57-40, to end the mandate in March. In addition, the CDC is facing several lawsuits challenging the mandate. A group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/17-gop-congress-members-sue-the-cdc-to-end-air-travel-mask-mandate\">17 Republican members<\/a> of Congress, led by Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie and Senator Rand Paul, sued the CDC to end the mandate on March 15, claiming the agency lacked the legal authority to force people to wear masks on airplanes. Another group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/10-pilots-from-major-airlines-suing-cdc-over-mask-mandates-on-airplanes\">10 pilots from major commercial airlines<\/a> filed a similar lawsuit challenging the mask mandates on March 21, citing conflicts with state and local laws, medical concerns, and the uptick in instances of unruly passengers.
