Please beware of this,\u201d reads the post\u2019s caption. \u201cIt\u2019s a very poisonous spider. If it stings you you will die within 5 minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A reverse image search revealed the photos portray a type of cork-lid trapdoor spider known as a Cyclocosmia. An image of the spider and information about it can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/spideridentifications.com\/cyclocosmia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spideridentifications.com<\/a>. The website\u2019s entry notes the spider inhabits parts of the U.S. and Asia but makes no mention of the spider\u2019s alleged deadly venom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The three photos included in the post were initially posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nickadel\/46549603985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a> in 2019 by photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickybay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicky Bay<\/a>, whose copyright logo appears in the corner of each photo. <span>After seeing his photos circulating with misinformed claims attached to them, Bay took to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/singaporemacro\/status\/1232697906743758850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> in February 2020 to debunk the falsehood that the spider was dangerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyway, the fake posts would state that this spider would kill humans easily etc etc,\u201d wrote Bay in one <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/singaporemacro\/status\/1232701548146245633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a>. \u201cIt is actually a very docile spider with medically insignificant venom. i.e. harmless to humans. It would also much rather hide than go chasing after anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bay explained in an email to Check Your Fact that the photos were taken in Thailand in 2018. \u201c<span>It lives in burrows, definitely not near any beach,\u201d he said. He also noted that while the spider uses venom to hunt its insect prey, it is harmless to humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Arachnologists confirmed Bay\u2019s statements. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/12\/fact-check-image-endangered-starry-butterfly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show An \u2018Endangered Starry Buttefly\u2019?)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike almost all spiders it has venom (which is not the same thing as poison, although in common English the two are sometimes mixed up) which it uses to catch its food,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiderdaynightlive.com\/\"><span>Sebastian Echeverri<\/span><\/a>, an arachnologist who runs the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiderdaynightlive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spiderdaynightlive.com<\/a>, in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cHowever, like almost all spiders, its venom barely does anything to humans, because no spiders can or need to eat humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/entomology.cals.cornell.edu\/people\/cole-gilbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Gilbert<\/a>, a professor of entomology at Cornell University, concurred. \u201cThis is a trap door tarantula in the genus\u00a0<i>Cyclocosmia<\/i> and is found in the southeast of the US, but is not particularly common,\u201d said Gilbert. \u201cLike all spiders, they do not sting as the blogger suggests.
