He told <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wosu.org\/news\/2018-03-02\/attorney-general-candidates-take-different-paths-on-guns-and-school-safety\">WOSU<\/a> that he supported universal background checks and bans on so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d during his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign, Dettelbach received endorsements from prominent gun control group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/everytown-for-gun-safety-action-fund-endorses-steve-dettelbach-for-ohio-attorney-general\/\">Everytown for Gun Safety<\/a>, as well as former President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveDettelbach\/status\/1024700879071576064\">Barack Obama<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveDettelbach\/status\/1029718097735954432\">Biden<\/a>.\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/16\/biden-lies-to-push-assault-on-second-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden Lies To Push Assault On Second Amendment)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dettelbach also opposed a plan to arm teachers in the aftermath of the February 2018 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, telling WOSU it was \u201cit doesn\u2019t protect people in any meaningful way it\u2019s more than a day late and much more than a dollar short.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho allows madmen such easy access to firearms?\u201d Dettelbach asked in a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveDettelbach\/status\/1157962143435763712\">Twitter post<\/a> shortly after a shooting in El Paso. \u201cWho armed a madmen with enough hate that he would kill people just because they were Hispanic? Those people must also be held accountable. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HQhy8oFtNr\">pic.twitter.com\/HQhy8oFtNr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Steve Dettelbach (@SteveDettelbach) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveDettelbach\/status\/1157962143435763712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2019<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dettelbach retweeted a 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sandyhook\/status\/1219479072193110016\">post<\/a> from the Sandy Hook Promise, a group which advocates for certain gun control measures, asking people to sign a \u201cpetition demanding action to prevent school shootings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House called Dettelbach \u201ca highly respected former U.S. Attorney and career prosecutor who spent over two decades as a prosecutor at the U.S. Department of Justice\u201d in a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/04\/11\/fact-sheet-the-biden-administration-cracks-down-on-ghost-guns-ensures-that-atf-has-the-leadership-it-needs-to-enforce-our-gun-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">release<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The nomination of Dettelbach comes in conjunction with a crackdown on so-called \u201cghost guns,\u201d according to the release. The Justice Department announced new rules to target so-called \u201cghost guns,\u201d including requiring those who make or sell them to get Federal Firearms Licenses and to run background checks. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/10\/biden-ghost-gun-rules\/\">(RELATED: Biden Expected To Release New \u2018Ghost Gun\u2019 Rules Within Days)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/09\/white-house-withdraw-david-chipman-atf-nominee-gun-control\/\">withdrew<\/a> the nomination of David Chipman to the ATF in September 2021 after allegations of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/29\/david-chipman-atf-judiciary-committee\/\">racist comments<\/a> and bipartisan pushback over his <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/26\/mike-lee-david-chipman-utterly-condescending-attitude-gun-owners\/\">attitude<\/a> toward gun owners. Chipman called for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/26\/david-chipman-bidens-atf-nominee-ban-ar-15s\/\">banning<\/a> the AR-15, a popular semi-automatic rifle, and pushed a definition of \u201cassault weapons\u201d that many viewed as more extreme than that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/08\/worse-gun-control-than-the-european-union-here-in-the-usa-yes-according-to-david-chipman\/\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s new pick to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is a rinse and repeat from his last unsuitable nominee, David Chipman,\u201d Amy Hunter, spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association, told the DCNF. \u201cThe new nominee, Steven Dettelbach, is a dedicated gun controller who has supported gun bans, restrictions on lawful firearm transfers and expansion of prohibitions on who can possess firearms.
